まず、このアルバムの注目すべきところはバンドのメンバーだろう。
マイケル・ブレッカー、ボブ・ミュンツァー・ピーター・アースキン、
ドン・アライアス・・・まさにジャコの誕生日にふさわしいメンツだ。肝心のジャコのプレイもスリリングかつ軽快で聴いていて元気が出る。
私のおすすめはザ・チキンとドミンゴ。特にドミンゴは静かなイントロ

から、一気に爆発し、マイケル・ブレッカーとの高速プレイがかっこいい。記念碑的１枚

1981年12月1日、フロリダのフォート・ローダーテイルのナイト・クラブ、『ミスター・ピップス』にて録音。この日はジャコの30才の誕生日に当たる。エグゼクティブ・プロデューサにマット・ピアソンの名前が見える。インナーではアルバム・プロデューサである盟友ピーター・アースキンが非常に長くかつ興味深い内容の解説をしている。

録音も含めて極めて素晴らしいアルバムである。このアルバムは『ワード・オブ・マウス・ビッグ・バンド』のデビュー・ライヴの記録としてだけでなく、マイケル・ブレッカーの参加によって、より意義のあるライヴになっている。その上、未発表曲『Domingo』も含まれる。マイケル・ブレッカーがこのバンドに参加したのはこの一夜のみであり、その意味でも価値あるライヴだ。

ただ、当夜のライヴ・ソースは実際は2時間以上のものが残っているらしい。いつか、『完全版』のリリースを望みたい。

Jaco Pastoriusの絶頂期のライブ音源で、初めてこの作品を聴いたときはその迫力に心底驚かされた。今までに聴いたことのある他のどのライブ音源よりもエネルギッシュで、スリリングで、そして何よりも幸福感に満ちている。まさに「絶頂期のバースデイコンサート」に相応しい名演。
選曲、曲順もナイスで、特に1曲目の「Soul Intro/The Chicken」から名曲「Liberty City」までの5曲は時間を忘れてしまうほど素晴らしい(「Invitation」なんて17分以上もあるのに!)。この豪華なコンサートの最後を飾る「America」でのJaco Pastoriusの静かなソロ・ベースも魅力的。
