アーティストについて

美しいハーモニーと爽快感溢れるサウンドで70年代の前半に湧き上がったウエスト・コースト・ロックの中で必ず登場するグループ。そして12弦ギターも織り交ぜたアコースティックなスタイルと流れる様なメロディ、そして美麗なハーモニーが聴く人の心にいつまでも残る、瑞々しい楽曲を多数発表している3人組。デビューは1972年、アメリカというバンド名とは裏腹にイギリスから登場。メンバーは、デユーイ・バネル(英)、ジェリー・ベッカー(米)、ダン・ピーク(米)の3人で、2人のアメリカ人とイギリス人が「アメリカ」という名前で、イギリスからデビューすることに当時は不思議な雰囲気もあった。しかし、3人とも同じイギリスにあるアメリカン・スクールの同窓生であり、そこでグループは結成されたことが、イギリス・デビューのきっかけとなっていた。そして、デビュー曲「名前のない馬」がオランダ、イギリスで大ヒットとなり、その後アメリカ本国でもデビューを飾る。デビュー・アルバム『アメリカ』に続いて発売されたセカンドは『ホームカミング』という里帰りを意味するタイトルがつけられ、まさに凱旋帰国、そして彼らの大ヒット曲「ヴェンチュラ・ハイウェイ」を収録した代表作となった。その後続いて、アルファベットの「H」で始まるタイトル『ハットトリック』(3rd)、『ホリデイ』(4th)、そして、全米No.1に輝いた「金色の髪の少女」含む『ハート』を1975年に発売。そして、『ハイダウェイ』(6th)、初のハワイ録音『ハーバー』とリリースを続けるが、このアルバムを最後に、オリジナル・メンバーのダン・ピークが脱退し、それぞれの道を進むことになった。今回は、デビュー35年を記念して、永遠の青春とも呼ばれる、初期のオリジナル作品7タイトルと、初のライヴ・アルバム『ライヴ』が2007年デジタル・リマスタリング音源で登場。なお、アメリカはその後も活動を続け、2007年4月にも新作リリースが予定されている。

ギターの音が今でもたまらない。最近聞いたジャネットジャクソンの新しいアルバムにアメリカのギターのフレーズに似た部分があり、懐かしく思って購入する羽目に。やっぱ、名曲は名曲です。残念なのは彼らはこのアルバムがやはり最高傑作！だということです。

1971年のヒット曲「名前のない馬」はもちろんですが、「リバーサイド」「スリーローズ」など、カッコイイーアコースティックなサウンドが聴けます。ポップで、さわやかなハーモニーと軽快なアコースティックギターサウンドは、当時脚光をあびていたアルバムです。セカンドアルバムやベストアルバムもよいですよ。
