ベスト盤というものは、どうしてもファンからすると「なぜあの曲が入っていないんだ!?」と言いたくなるもの。まして、数年前にベスト盤が出て、さらにその数年前にも出ていたという状況では、ファンであればあるほど「いい加減にしてくれ」という気持ちになってくる。だが、いままでサイモンのソロ作品を聴いたことがないという人は、やはりベスト盤から聴いてみようと思うだろう。そういう人には、今のところ最新のベスト盤であり、リマスタリングで格段に音の良くなった36曲もの歌が入っていて、映像まで見られるというこのベスト盤が最適だろう。サイモンはアルバムごとに何かしら新しいことに取り組んできたので、最初にどのアルバムを聴くかでイメージが全く異なってしまうこともありうるからだ。ただ、そのためにかえってこうしたベスト盤でまとめて聴いてしまうとそれぞれのアルバムの特色がわかりにくくもなるので、もしこれを聴いて興味を持ったら、ぜひ各アルバムを順次聴いてみてほしい。

ファンにとっては、最大の魅力はＤＶＤだろう。たしかに何らかの形で目にしたことのあるものもあるだろうが、それらを１枚のＤＶＤでまとめて、しかもきれいな映像で大きな画面で見られるのはやはりありがたい。それから、ＣＤ収録曲としては、70年代のベスト盤に追加の新曲として収録されそれが廃盤となってからは長年入手が困難だった“Stranded in a Limousine”や、これまで日陰の存在だった“Peace Like a River”などが入っているのが興味深い。前者は、最近リマスタリングして再発されたアルバム_One-Trick Pony_（紙ジャケ日本盤あり）のボーナス・トラックになっているが、長年日の目を見なかったのにベスト盤に選曲されるとは驚きだ。後者は、2006年のモントリオール・ジャズ・フェスティヴァルでサイモンを讃えるトリビュート・コンサートが行われた際にエルヴィス・コステロとアラン・トゥーサンが印象的な演奏をしたこともあって選ばれたのだろう。（そのコンサートは現在輸入盤_Tribute to Paul Simon_として入手可能。）オリジナル・アルバムは全部持っているというファンでも、買っても良いのではないだろうか（サイモンがガーシュウィン賞を受賞したことへのお祝いの気持ちも込めて）。

なお、星５つとしたのは、主にこれからサイモンの音楽を聴いてみようとベスト盤を買う人を対象に考えたことと、そのＤＶＤが付いていることを加味しての評価で、ここに含まれている音源は全て持っていて映像も全て何らかの形で持っているか見たことがあるから未知のものは何もないという人には星を１つか２つ減らしてもよいかもしれない。

　S&G解散後のポール・サイモンの音楽はエスニック・サウンドに接近しながらもAOR的な部分を残した"Hearts And Bones"までの時期と大胆に転身した"Graceland"以降に大きく分けられます。この作品は概ねその二つの時期に分けた2枚組のベスト盤で、また現時点までのアルバムすべてから偏りなく選曲されており、そういう意味ではこれまでの活動を俯瞰しやすくまとめた好編集盤と言えるでしょう。
　ただ、これまでオリジナル・アルバムをきちんと聴いてきた者としては、新たにリマスターされたとはいえ、音源的には興味がもてない「どうでもいいベスト盤」です。初回盤のみレアな映像が入ったDVD付きですが、「全てが初商品化」と謳っているのは誤りで「サタデー・ナイト・ライブ」の映像なんかはこれまでも正規に観ることができましたし、ほかもネット上で見ることのできるものも多いです。
　要するにファンにとっては「DVDの為に5000円出せるのか？」「輸入盤なら60％の価格なのに字幕のためだけでここまで出すのか？」ということが問われる踏み絵のようなベスト盤、です。
　どうせなら、早く"Hearts And Bones"のガーファンクル参加ヴァージョンを正規発売してくれよ、と思うのは僕だけでしょうか？？

　これは、アメリカ国会図書館が創設したガーシュイン賞の第1回受賞アーティストなったことを契機に、コンパイルされたベスト・アルバムです。
　ポール・サイモンは、多くのベスト・アルバムを持っています。S&G時代では、「グレイト・ヒッツ」を頂点に、「若き緑の日々」「冬の散歩道」「オールド・フレンズ」「サイモン＆ガーファンクルのすべて」や「エッセンシャル」などが、僕のCDボックスにあります。
　ポール・サイモン時代では、「ネゴシエイションとラブ・ラブソングス」「ボーン・アット・ザ・ライト・タイム」「グレイト・ソングブック」や「シャイニング・ライク・ア・ナショナル・ギター」etc.。
　今回のベスト・アルバムの特徴は、72年から06年までのタイムリー性に加え、レアTV映像が収録されていることでしょう。
　「ボーイ・イン・ザ・バブル」「オヴィアス・チャイルド」や「ファーザー・アンド・ドーター」などのプロモーション・ビデオと、ひき語りで歌う「ミセス・ロビンソン」。ジョージ・ハリスンとの「早く家へ帰りたい」は、この直前に「ヒア・カムズ・ザ・サン」を共演したあとのもので、必見です。
　S&G時代からポールのファンの僕は、このアルバムをすぐに予約しました。彼らが活躍した時代の映像は、まず見ることは出来ず、もっぱらLPアルバムのジャケットを通して、彼らのことを知ることがやっとでした。今は、このアルバムに限らず、彼の映像を楽しむことができます。僕も、いくつかの映像を持っていますが、このアルバムDVDはお宝映像ではないでしょうか。時の流れを超えて、ポールを感じることができるアルバムです。
