原田知世さんは80年代最大のヒロインのひとり。大林監督も尾道3部作で80年代は絶頂期。このふたりの「時をかける少女」につぐコラボ作です。

ひたすら、もうひたすら美しすぎる、南太平洋の海、小島に住む素朴でこころゆたかなひとたち。崖からみる珠玉のサンセット光景。映像が超、超美しく、これだけでも癒されてしまいます。

大林監督の秘蔵っ子だったのに惜しまれつつ引退した高柳良一さんの演じる現地日系人と、「時をかける少女」のときとまったく同様にほのかな慕情を寄せ合う知世さん。まるでリインカーネイションのようです。ふたりともいまみても、恋する若者の健全でさわやかな輝きにあふれています。なお知世さんのドラム缶での入浴シーンは話題になりました。

癒しのひと原田知世と癒しの監督の、究極のコラボレイトですね、癒されたいひとむけの佳品です。

家族が亡くなった時、本当に霊となって戻ってきたり
するのだろうか？「天国にいちばん近い島」。
桂木万里（原田知世）は、父の死、その思いを消化しきれず旅に出る。
父に会いたくて、幼い時に、父に教えられた神様が降りてくる
という南の島”天国にいちばん近い島”に行ってみたくて
ニューカレドニアを旅する。
２０年も前の映画、今も、清楚なイメージのある原田知世が
可憐で、守って上げたいと思わせる。
「天国にいちばん近い島」の原作は、森村桂の小説
私は、中学2年生の時、「天国にいちばん近い島」を読みました。
そして映画封切当時は、新米サラリーマン、原田知世と薬師丸ひろ子主演
の角川映画、どちらも見たい映画なので、当然映画館で見ました。
そして、子供が中学1年になって、なっかしさからビデオでみました。
初めて見た時、と違うのは、子供を持つ親の気持ちがなんとなくわかって
親の死も実際に体験しているので、主人公の気持ちも身近に感じられました。
親の死が、子供を成長させる。身近だけれど誰もが乗り越えなければいけない
テーマなので、古臭さを感じさせません。
　ちなみに、ニューカレドニア、どこにあるかと言うと、日本から東南の吉方位
ニュージランドの手前にあります。
付属のニューカレドニアの観光ガイドは、本編よりさらに美しく
ニューカレドニアへ旅行する人にはお勧めのビデオです。
ニューカレドニア生きているうちに是非1度行ってみたいと思わせる
映画です。
