前作がすごくツボだったので期待していたのですが、MySpaceの僅かなサンプルを聴いただけで購入を決めました。発売前のシングル「SickSickSick」のような激しい曲から、ミドルテンポの曲まで全11曲と曲数は若干少なめですが、約48分にまとめられている本作は2年待った甲斐がありました。

インパクトの強いキャラで人気だったニック・オリヴェリが脱退してからもう結構な年月が経つ。
前作を未聴なので、これがニック脱退後初のＱＯＴＳＡ作品になります。

今のロックシーンで最も「全うなロック」を鳴らしてくれているこのバンド。
メタルフリークの弟に「Songs For The Deaf」を聞かせたら「なんか古いね」という意見が帰ってきた。
成る程、その意見はある意味認めてもいい。
ただ、ファズをブリブリ効かせたギター、簡素でインパクトのあるリフ、普遍性とハードさを兼ね備えたソングライティング、
これらのトラディショナルな要素を保ったまま飽くまで「今のロック」にこだわってるのがこのバンドの良さだと思ってます。
ストーナーという限定的なジャンルで語られ、それをアピールしつつも自身はすでにそこから飛び出しつつあった大傑作「rated R」。
シンプルなアイデアが見事なロックンロールへと結実していて、それはストーンズから始まって、ブラックサバス、ストゥージス、ニルヴァーナなど、
ロックの純粋な魂が培われた年月の先でなければ決して見出せないもの。
モダンなロックのオリジンとして、ストロークス（voがコレに参加してますね）が今ゆるぎない地位を確立していますが、
それとは違った立ち位置として、ＱＯＴＳＡも、今のバンドが目指すべく指標になるのではないかと思ってます。

前述の２枚と比べると今作は、ニックが抜けた分のユーモア性は減退したものの、
ジョシュのメンタリティーがピリッっとアルバムの統制を促し、隙のない一枚に仕上がっています。
叙情性を湛えたナンバー４，７が絶妙な配置でアルバムの緩急のフォルムを形作っており、
作りこまれたリフが素晴らしいハードなナンバーを引き立たせます。
やはりシングルになった「sick,sick,sick」があまりにもクール。
殆ど単一コードのリフのみで凄まじいグルーブを作り上げ、シンクロするボーカルと共に最後まで疾走する爆音ナンバーです。
大げさにスタンスを変えることはせず、どんな曲でもクールに歌いあげるジョシュのボーカルも素敵だ。この千両役者め！

ストーナーの枠から飛び越え、現代ロックの一角を担う存在として他に比肩しうるのは間違いない。んだけど・・・
最近チョット売り上げが落ち気味らしい。う〜ん、確かに渋いからなあある意味。でも愚弟よろしく「古い」なんつったら許さんぞ。
もう一回プラチナをたたき出すポテンシャルはある。無理はして欲しくないが、今のロックにもう一度きついインパクト与えたれや！
