　マイケル・ダグラス演じるD・フェンスは職を失い、家族を失い、自分を取り巻く状況の悪さに常にいらだっている。この映画が製作された15年前にはこの男の行動は理解できなかったが、キレる人間が多くなり衝動的な殺人・傷害事件の多発する今日では自分たちの周りにもD・フェンスのような人間がいるのかもしれない。理由はどうあれ彼の行動には同情できないが、この映画のもう一人の登場人物である退職間際の老刑事はD・フェンスとは対照的に実に人間味あふれるベテラン刑事で、この刑事には幼い娘を失った過去と、ヒステリックで仕事に理解のない妻と、嫌味な上司がいるが、泣き言は言わずに誠実に仕事をこなし、部下にはしたわれている。この映画の製作者はD・フェンスに対比させる人間像としてこの老刑事を配したのだと思うが、見終わった後にはこの老刑事のほうが主役に思えるほどで、ロバート・デュバルの演技も見事だった。

ロバート・デュバルVSマイケル・ダグラスという事態にまず星5つ。
「ヒート」でのデ・ニーロVSパチーノという事態並に良い組み合わせ。
そして、取り返しのつかないぐらいプッツンしちゃったイカれサラリーマンを
同じぐらいの狂気を笑顔の裏に忍ばせている老刑事が追う。
という単純明快なストーリー!これがおもしろくないわけがない。
物語自体は意外に淡々と地味めな展開をするけれど
とにかく2人の怪優の競演に浸りましょう。
