デクスターとパウエルの10数年ぶりの再会セッションによるスタンダード集。62年にデクスターはヨーロッパへ渡る。今作はパリでバド・パウエルとの10数年ぶりの再会セッション。後年、この時期のパウエルをモデルにした映画「ラウンド・ミッドナイト」ではデクスターが主演した。

   モダン・ジャズの誕生、つまりビバップ期から活動するデクスター・ゴードンだが、50年代は不遇だった。60年代に入り、名門ブルーノート・レーベルに録音を開始し、完全復活を成し遂げたゴードンは、次にヨーロッパはパリへ移る。
   ニューヨークでの暮らしを嫌いヨーロッパへ移ったジャズメンはこの時期多かったが、デクスターもまた、ケニー・クラーク(Dr)や、バド・パウエル(P)を頼ってパリへ。つまりニューヨークのジャズファンにとっては、「我らがデクスター」がパリにて録音したアルバムである。
   モダンジャズピアノの開祖バド・パウエルはすでにパリにおり、パリにおけるバド・パウエル・トリオが旧友を迎えた再会セッションとなった。いい意味でリラックスし、久々に刺激しあい、名演が生まれた。ベテランと呼ばれるようになったとはいえ、旬を過ぎた連中の本場ではない場所での録音である。だが演奏は充実し、66年に亡くなったバド・パウエルの晩年の名演も聴ける名盤といえる。 （高木宏真）

この日、デクスターゴードンはすべて新曲から成るニューアルバムをパリで録音する予定だったらしい。しかし、昔のよしみで呼んだ？バドパウエルが新曲を覚えられず、急遽、懐かしのスタンダーズ曲集に変更させられた。その怒り？をパワーに変えたのだろうか、この日のデックスは徹底的に豪快なパワープレイに終始する。

スタンダーズ名曲を容赦情けなしに切り捨て御免にする。バラードもジャンプナンバーもお構いなしの一本調子でブロウしまくる。豪快無比で、唯我独尊かつ自己陶酔的なその様が愉快でもある。あの「ウィローウィープフォーミー」も大変なことになっている。そんなデクスターをうまくプッシュするのが名ドラマーのケニークラーク。ベースのミストロフはその様を静かに見つめる。冷や汗を流しながら必死についてくるのがこの日のバドパウエル。無視してＯＫだ。

話によると、デックスが去った後、クラークとミストロフに泣いて頼んで？、「ライクサンワンインラブ」をトリオで録音させてもらったらしい。（当然それはボツになった。）名盤誕生の陰にはこんな秘話があった？。そんなパリでのバドを将来デックスがスクリーンで演じるなんて誰が予想できただろうか。

アマゾン・レビューに「1960年代パリで10年ぶりに再会を果たしたゴードンとパウエルのセッション」とあるのを見て、思わず映画「ラウンド・ミッドナイト」を思い出してしまった。ゴードン主演のこの映画は、パウエルの生涯にレスター・ヤングのエピソードを織り交ぜて作られているからだ。
それはさておき、この時期のデクスターの充実ぶりには目を見張るべきものがある。ワーデル・グレイとの双頭コンビや、「ライズ・アゲイン」セッションにより、バップ・テナー界の第一人者の地位を確立した彼が、再起後に放った最高傑作が本作品である。
豪放磊落で、細かいことにこだわらない肉厚のごりごり・テナーが信条のデックスだが、２．や４．のような曲でも十分に聴かせるところがミソ。パウエルのサポートも絶妙で、この録音時は絶好調だったようだ。
ブルーノートらしい芯の堅い音も、演奏を土台から支えて好感が持てる。

ブルーノート時代のアルバムでは一押しのアルバム。聴きやすい曲ばかりなのでとにかくリラックスして聴けます。サイドマンにはパウエル、クラークといったビッグ・ネームが名を連ねているがでしゃばらずサポートに徹しており、ゴードンもマイペースで長いソロ吹ききっています。またこのアルバム全体に流れる雰囲気は、のちのモンマルトル・コレクションにも繋がっており機会があればこちらも一聴することをお薦めます。
