マイルスは49年に自身の九重奏団を率いて「クールの誕生」を発表しジャズの新地平を開拓しますが、経済的な理由により解散を余儀なくされます。
そこで次にマイルスは51年プレスティジで発表された「ディグ」の中で、ビ・バップに「クールの誕生」で培ったアレンジを取り入れより洗練された演奏を行いました。これがハード・バップの原点となったのです。しかし、この時期マイルスは麻薬に侵され、ついにはスランプに陥ってしまいました。その時、ブルーノートはマイルスに年に一度の録音を約束しました。その成果がこのアルバムとvol.1です。
このアルバムの最大の魅力は、アート・ブレイキーのドラムに鼓舞されてマイルスとその仲間達が火を噴くかの様な演奏を繰り広げる「テンパス・フュージット」です。ちなみにこの後、マイルスは自身の五重奏団を、ブレイキーはジャズ・メッセンジャーズを率いてハード・バップをさらに展開させていきます。そういった意味でこのセッションはハード・バップ誕生の前夜祭のようなものかもしれません。
また、j.j・ジョンソン作曲の二曲も哀愁が漂い、ジミー・ヒースの「C.T.A」はユニークで両者ともに素晴らしい出来です。ガレスピー作曲の一曲も、エモーショナルで心に沁みる演奏となっております。
苦闘する帝王の、その苦しさを感じさせない演奏とハード・バップの形成。これらは一聴に値するものと思います。
