5.0 out of 5 stars 苦闘するマイルスとハード・バップの形成, 2009/11/15
マイルスは49年に自身の九重奏団による「クールの誕生」を発表し、アレンジを重視したクール・ジャズと呼ばれるジャズの新地平を開拓しましたが、九重奏団は経済的理由のため解散を余儀なくされました。
そこで次にマイルスはビ・バップの中に「クールの誕生」で培ったアレンジを取り入れ、より洗練化した演奏をしようとしました。その結果は51年のプレスティジから発表された「ディグ」で実を結びます。これがハード・バップの原点となったのです。しかし、マイルスはこの時期麻薬に侵されてしまいスランプに陥ってしまいました。
その時ブルーノートはマイルスに年に一度の録音を約束しました。その成果がこのアルバムとvol.2です。
このアルバムの最大の魅力は52年録音の哀愁漂う「ディア・オールド・ストックホルム」ですが、52年録音の曲は全体として「ディグ」と同じくアレンジが施され、また「ディグ」は演奏時間が長いですがこのアルバムの曲は3〜5分間なのでとても聴きやすいです。また、二曲のバラードはマイルスのワン・ホーンによるもので、メロディーがエモーショナルに綴られていきます。54年の録音では、ホレス・シルヴァーのファンキーなピアノとアート・ブレイキーの強烈なドラムにプッシュされ、マイルスがブリリアントな演奏を繰り広げます。モンクの曲である「ウェル、ユー・ニードント」ではゆったりとしたテンポの中で、シルヴァーのピアノに乗りながらマイルスのトランペットが鼻歌を歌うようにメロディーを紡ぎだしていきます。「イット・ネヴァー・エンタード・マイ・マインド」はマラソン・セッション時と比べると木製のミュートを用いてますが、ほぼマイルスのミュート奏法が完成していることに気が付き興味深く、また演奏としても価値のあるものです。
苦闘する帝王とハード・バップの形成、そして何よりこの素晴らしい音の数々は一聴に値すると思います。
