ニューヨークの元祖ヘヴィーメタル、ブルーオイスターカルトの名盤の誉れ高いサードアルバムです。初期の三枚のアルバムはどれも素晴らしいですが、アルバムとしての完成度では本作品が最も秀でていると言えるでしょう。個人的にはずっとこの路線でいって欲しかったですね・・・・。
このアルバムにはメタリカのカバーでお馴染のアストロノミーを始めとして、当時のコンサートのオープニングナンバーだった人間そっくりなど、ファンの間でも人気の高いナンバーが多数収録されています。
もしもHR/HMファンならば、初期の三枚はなんとしても押さえてもらいたいと思います。

　本作がBOCの最高傑作であるという意見には大いに賛同できる所がある。
私はメタル系には詳しくないが、70年代中期の時代に彼等はロックとして十分に評価されるべきアルバムを幾つも作った。中でも本作の収録曲は分かりやすい旋律と乗りの良いリズムで私達を引き付けるのである。
　まず、統一されたサウンドによるアルバム構成に関心する。バックダーマのギターリストとしての表現力こそ、スーパー･ギタリストの時代に評価を受け生き抜いた要因でもある。
　硬質ロックで知られた初期の3作、話題騒然のLive集、4作目以降のポップ路線、色々な歴史を持ったBOCであるが、広くポップス界においても本作は名演名作だと思う。
｢ゴジラ｣や｢死神｣｢君に燃えて｣辺りでBOC知る人もいるだろうが、生まれて間もない頃の彼等は実に硬質で印象的な作品を残している。本作はその代表である。
ただし、邦題にはいささか痒みを覚えるのであるが･･。･

2007年の今、このＣＤを手にして、大げさな邦題と1974年当時の解説文を読むのも面白い。
74年と言えば、映画『エクソシスト』公開をひとつのピークとして、日本中がオカルトブームの年だった。中岡俊哉著『恐怖の心霊写真集』および『狐狗狸さんの秘密』が刊行され、つのだじろうが『うしろの百太郎』と『恐怖新聞』を平行して連載して大人気だった。
そんな年であったからこそ、『オカルト宣言』という邦題が通用した。
オカルトは最先端だったのである。
解説文を見ると、KISSの人気がブレイクする前なので「キスというバンド」という書き方になっているし、パティ・スミスは歌手デビューしていないので、女流詩人として紹介されている。そんな1974年のロックである。
まだヘヴィメタルという音楽ジャンルは無かった時期に、自分たちの信じる音を鳴らしていた者だけが持つ、永遠の新しさが刻まれている。
