ジェームス・イハとダーシー抜きでの再結成となり、従来のメンバーはビリー・コーガンとジミー・チェンバレンの2人だけである。
スマパンサウンドはサイケデリック・ロックとへヴィロックの融合という所に大きな魅力があったわけだけだが、新編成で挑んだ今作においてはそれは必ずしも有効なものではない。
ジェームス・イハのサイケデリックでメランコリックなギターの代わりに、80年代的なハードロック仕様のギターが乗っているという感じだろうか。
ドラムスもかなり手数を減らし、ブレイクやリズムに重点を置いている。

またスマパン後期に見られたようなニューウェーブ色も今作ではかなり排除されている。
つまり、バンドサウンド主体ということだ。
イメージ的には１stのギッシュをよりメタリックにし、へヴィロックにしたという印象。
アルバムにトゥデイや1979のようなメランコリックな要素を求めている人には少々、退屈かもしれない。
しかし、再結成で新編成ということもあったのかもしれないが、曲よりもバンドサウンド作りに重点を置こうとしたビリーの判断は必ずしも間違ってはいない。
ここで鳴らされているサウンドが間違いなくスマッシング・パンプキンズである。

その一方で昔からのファンが求めているサウンドが抜け落ちてしまったことも確かである。
このアルバムを聞いて、「イハが居ればな・・・」と思うファンはそう少なくないはず。

とまあ何だかんだと言っているが、スマパンが復活し、ビリーが元気そうに歌っているのはやはり胸を打つものがある。復活ライブでのトゥデイは言うまでもなく素晴らしかった。
7年の時間を経て、スマパンが再び動き出した。
その動き出しを見られることはきっと幸せだ。

スマパン再結成！正直レイジの再結成のようには嬉しくない。
なぜならイハやダーシーがいないから、まあダーシーは無理でもイハとメリッサには復帰して欲しかった。
正直視聴して、スマパンであってスマパンでない。
ビリーのテンションがあがりきってないのよ。。。
チェンバレンのドラムはさすがだけど。。。
きっとたりないのは、ぶち切れたロック感、汚さ、メランコリックな感じとかスマパンの持ってる半分くらいの力しかでていない。
でもきっとこれが今のスマパンなんだろうと思う。
アルバム全体を通すとそんなに悪くもなく、今年でたモンスターバンドのアルバムじゃ良い部類に入るんだろうし、初めてスマパンを聴く人はスマパンってカッコイイって普通に思うだろう。
でもイハとダーシーがいたら、いやイハだけでも良い。戻ってきておくれ！
私の正直な感想は４分の２スマパンだ。
切り取られた部分は大きすぎる。
あらためて感じるのは、ビリーコーガンと愉快な仲間たちではなかったということだ。

ビリーとジミーだけが旧メンバーのスマパン復活になってしまったが、スマパンのハードでどことなく寂しげなサウンドは基本的に健在！
・・・というものの、イハが抜けた先入観で聴くとやっぱり違うかも。
人が成長していくようにバンドも変化し続けていくとするなら、きっとこれがスマパンらしさなのだと思う。

ただ、お願いだからまたすぐに解散するのだけは勘弁。
