思い込みの強い人というのは、自身の脚本よりも人の本を監督した場合の方が、良い結果を生む場合が多いような気がする。ハーマン・メルヴィルの原作を映画化した本作品は、自伝的要素の強かったアレックス３部作に比べ、主人公ピエール（おそらく彼もカラックスの分身かと思われる）を見つめるカラックスの目との距離感が遠くなったせいか、視野が広がり作品に普遍性が生まれているような気がする。

カラックスから“未熟者”よばわりされたギヨーム・ドパルデューであるが、親の七光りという恩恵を受けている点で、主人公ピエールと重なるナイスなキャスティングといえる。近作『ランジェ公爵夫人』でも、モンリヴォー将軍役を貫禄たっぷりに演じていたが、父親（ジェラール・ドパルデュー）とはまた異なった存在感を本作品でも見せている。この人、本当に足が悪くてびっこを引いているような話を聞いたことがあるのだが、映画前半部分では普通に歩いていたような・・・（そのシーンだけ吹き替えだったのかなぁ？）。

有名外交官の息子であり、処女作が大ヒットした作家の卵ピエール。母親マリー（カトリーヌ・ドヌーヴ）とお城で贅沢な暮らしをしている典型的なボンボンだ。そのピエールの元に、彼の異母姉と名乗るジプシー風の女イザベル（カテリーナ・ベルゴア）が現れる。彼女の存在を隠していた親たちの欺瞞に気づいたピエールは、イザベルを連れて城を出る決心をする。行く先々でイザベルの存在が足かせとなり、生活自体もままならなくなる。世の中の嘘を暴き真実にたどりつこうとしたピエールではあったが、「世を罰しようとする人間は、世から報いを受ける」のだ。背に腹は変えられず再び“光の中”へ返り咲こうとするが、出版社に別名で送った原稿も模倣品と酷評され、ＴＶ番組に出演しても偽者よばわり。唯一の真実であったイザベルとの愛も、彼女についた嘘によっていとも簡単に崩壊してしまう。

真実を暴こうとする報いをこれでもかと受けるピエールの姿は、マスコミに持ち上げられて映画界に颯爽と登場し、あっというまに消えてしまったカラックス自身とどうしてもかぶって見えてしまう。彼の作品は、その“青臭さ”が好きか嫌いかによって評価が分かれてしまう傾向にあるが、本作品はその“青臭さ”を逆手にとった演出が見事にはまっている。「あなたの本質はその未熟さにあるの」出版プロデューサーのおばさんのこの台詞は、大人になったカラックスがようやく客観的に自己を分析できるようになった証のような気がするのだ。
