当時も今もあまりにも衝撃的なストーリ展開に賛否あるのは当然でしょう。

まず、終始暴力的な犯罪には賛成はできない。壮絶な打ち合い、何度も繰り返す車泥棒、そして人殺し。子供には見せられない映画であることは間違いないが、最後に悪は必ず滅びるということを教えるのであれば、それはそれでこの映画の最大のメッセージであろう。

ラストシーンはあまりにもあっけなく、それまでの逃亡生活の緊張感が少しも感じられなかった。私的には、追われる身であるならば、誰も信用してはいけないことをこの映画から学んだよ。

ジェームス・ディーンが主演した「怒れる若者」をテーマにした映画とは、まっ
たく意味が異なります。それまでは若者の怒りも、青春の苦悩も、
ハリウッド商業主義のバリエーションのひとつに過ぎませんでした。
そこには、この映画のような殺伐としてかっこよくない主役はいません。
銃撃戦も、発砲者を映した瞬間にカメラが切り替わり、撃たれた方が倒れるとい
うお約束描写。
銃弾が当たるシーンを直接映すなんてのは、この作品で初めて試みられた、
野心的というか、冒険的というか、早い話が掟破りの手法でした。
衝撃のラストシーンだけに目が行くと、現代のレベルではさして驚きがないで
しょうが、この作品のあらゆる試みが、当時としては、斬新という表現を超え
「異端」であったわけで、商業的成功が伴わなかった場合、カルトとして闇に
葬られていた可能性すらあるであったことに、そしてそれを製作したウオーレ
ン・ベイティ氏に敬意を表すものです。時代を切り開いたのですから。
