　大自然の前では、動物も人間（凶悪犯）も同じだ。ただサバイバル（生き残り）をかけて行動するだけだ。みたいなことをメイキングの中で原作者が言っている。まさにこの映画のテーマである。都会を離れた山奥での気楽なカヌーでの川下りのはずが、大自然の中でのサバイバルへと一変する。極限状態に追い込まれた４人の男たちの緊迫感に溢れたドラマに引き込まれる。文明人と野性、大自然との対決。生き抜いていくための本能、資質とは？この映画が公開されたときよりも、さらにひ弱になっている文明人としては、おもいっきりぶん殴られたような衝撃を感じる。自分が彼らの立場になったら・・・。そんなことも考えてしまうほど、見終わったあとに主人公たちと同じ経験を体感したかのような気分になってしまう。途中からほとんどセリフもなくなっていく中での異様な緊張感は、ジョン・ブアマン監督の演出の力でしょう。ビルモス・ジグモント（ディア・ハンターなどの名手）の撮影も見事です。主役の４人もリアルな名演。傑作です。あと、あのバンジョーの音楽！頭にこびりついて離れません。このＤＶＤ、１０分程度の当時のメイキング（原作者にスポットが当てられています）、予告編、日本語吹き替え付きです。（ＴＶでなじんだ吹き替えとは違います。録音しなおしたのでしょうか。）
　今度、特別版のＤＶＤが発売されるとのこと。デジタルリマスターされるのでしょうか？リマスターされたジグモンドの映像を見たい！

アメリカの田舎の怖さに満ち溢れてる映画としては悪魔のいけにえと並びます。こちらはホラーではないですがかえってそれがリアルですね。ネッドビーテイさんが山男たちに陵辱されるなんて子供の時の僕には刺激強すぎでした。タフガイのバートレイノルズが怪我してほとんど役に立たないという設定も意外性があって怖かったです。そろそろリメイクしてもいい時期なのでは。ハードル高すぎて、まあこれは超えられないと思いますが。
