ヒッチコック監督の最後から2番目の作品となりますが、ゴールデン・グローブ賞4部門にノミネートされている晩年の傑作と言えるでしょう。

連続殺人事件が今回のストーリーですが、これがまたロンドンということでさらにミステリアスな展開となっている。犯罪史的にもロンドンは猟奇的な殺人事件が起こっていることからも、逆にハリウッド映画にない生々しさが多分にあるように感じられた。

また、活気に満ちたコベント・ガーデン市場がなんともいえないロンドンの雰囲気を醸し出している。

前作の『トバーズ（1969年）』よりは確実に良い作品に出来上がっている。なんたって、ヒッチコック自身がテムズ川に浮いていたシーンをプレヴュー用で撮影していた。あれって本物なのかなあ？

怖いですが、面白いです。さすが、ヒッチコック、と思いました。ずっと、真犯人の思い通りになっていたので、最後に解決されるシーンでは、ホッとしました。警察の妻の推理が見事です。料理は本当に美味しくなさそうで、笑ってしまいましたが・・・。

　ヒッチコック晩年の大傑作。

　「引き裂かれたカーテン」や「トパーズ」で　ヒッチコックの衰えが指摘された時期が有った。その後の本作で　ヒッチコックは　往年の　というよりは　全く新しい　「冴え」を見せつけたのが本作である。

　ヒッチコックの映画には一種典雅なムードが漂う作品が多い。どこか優雅な作風だ。それが無いのは「サイコ」くらいだったかもしれない。
　それに対して「フレンジー」には　かような　クラシックな雰囲気は無い。むしろ　最近にまで綿々と続く　猟奇殺人映画の元祖として　異様な雰囲気に満ちている。この作品の延長上に「羊たちの沈黙」であるとか「ブラックダリア」等があると僕は思う。

　それに加えて嬉しいのは　ヒッチコックらしい　ブラックユーモアの復活だ。これ以上は見ていない人のため　書かないが　本作のブラックの度合いも相当なものである。

　ヒッチコックを源泉とした映画ジャンルは本当に多い。ヒッチコックが　芸術至上主義ではなく　むしろ職業的監督であったことを考えると　寧ろ驚いてよいくらいだ。

　こういう監督は今　いるのだろうか？
