英BBCが選ぶ2007年の注目アーティストの第9位に入った、このGhosts（ちなみに1位はMika、3位はKlaxons、5位はEnter Shikariと、それぞれ本国でブレイクした面々）。Ghostsの音楽性は大まかに言って、まず、ブリットポップにも通じるポップな楽曲にシンセを中心にした80sアレンジを乗せたキャッチーな曲、次にColdplayやKeane、Radioheadなどに通じる美しく壮大な曲のふたつに分けられます。しかしどの曲にも共通しているのは、聴けば聴くほど味が出てくる、決して言い過ぎではなく魔法のようなメロディがあるということです。

あと個人的には、ボーカルのキュートな声といい、コーラスを重視するところといい、青にこだわったような楽曲（ジャケットも）といい、The Bluetonesを彷彿とさせます。

曲の方を見てみると、ヒットシングルの「Stay The Night」や「The World Is Outside」、「Stop」辺りが、ブリットポップ風の楽曲と80sアレンジを融合させたような曲で（そう聞くとなんだか相性が悪そうな気がしそうですが）、これがなかなかどうして、かなり斬新で上手いことはまってます。

一方「Ghosts」、「Ming Games」、「Further And Further Away」、「Wrapped Up In Little Stars」などの、じっくり聴かせるバラード曲の素晴らしさも特筆すべき点で、とりわけラストの「Temporary」は、Suedeの「Stay Together」（ロング・バージョン）を思い起こさせるような壮大な名曲です。

僕のお気に入りは、あえて選ぶなら、弾むようなポップさが光る「Musical Chairs」、切ないメロディの「Ghosts」ですが、正直言って全ての曲が素晴らしいです。あと彼らはシングルのB面曲にも、アルバム曲以上どころかシングルA面いけるんじゃないかってくらいの名曲も多いんで、アルバムが気に入った人は要チェックです。

ちなみにこのアルバムは全英18位に入ったものの、最初に挙げたバンドのような本格的ブレイクは果たせていませんし、日本ではそもそも日本盤がリリースされていない状態。近年のシーンでは、こういうポップなバンドは冷遇されがちな気がしてなりません。でもこういったバンドはトップに君臨するバンドになるというよりは、ひそかに息の長いバンドになりそうな気がします。
