１９７０年に公開された「家族」は，山田洋次監督流ヒューマンドラマの超大作でした。
あれから１０年，本作はハリウッドの「シェーン」のリメイク版（確かにシェーンの音楽は使われている）という話しもありますが，私は「家族」の続編のような気がします。亡くなった夫の「牧場主になる」という夢を実現させるために，子どもと一緒に頑張っている姿が「家族」のエンディングにかぶるからです。
確かに，１９７７年１０月に，ピート・ハミル原作の「幸せの黄色いリボン」をリメイクした「幸せの黄色いハンカチ」が大ヒットした後なので，そのように評価する方も多いのだと思いますが，
私にはどうしても風見民子という名前が気になるのです。
ストーリー的には「家族」とは全く異なり，高倉健の味が前面に出た作品になっています。
“無骨で無口で不器用だが”という，どの作品でも変わらない“健さん”キャラクターを，ストーリーや時代背景，共演者たちが盛り上げ，山田洋二監督が決して嫌味でない味付けをし，ラストにはお約束とでもいえそうな演出の妙で，観客たちはみな涙してしまいます。
本作では，無口で背中で語るような高倉健と対照的に，お調子者ながら人のいい虻田役のハナ肇が，何とも言えない味を出しています。感動のラストのシーンは，ハナ肇無くして語ることは出来ないと思います。
人の心の揺れ動きを見事なまでに演出する山田洋次監督は流石としか言いようがありませんね。
また本作は，中国でも公開され，高倉健の名前が広く知れ渡ることになりました。その結果，2006年 「近代中国に影響を与えた外国人50人」の中に高倉健が選ばれています。

個人的には「幸せの黄色いハンカチ」より好きです。
とはいえ「幸せの黄色いハンカチ」を好きな方には、ぜひセットで所蔵していただきたいです。

ストーリーは結構シンプルだと思うのですが、マイナスさをまったく感じさせず、
出てくるキャラクターすべてが実に魅力的で、ストレートに「良い作品」です。
心が震えますよ。
