前作は、メガデス名義とは言え、実質的にはソロ作品で、曲の間口の広さに総決算のような印象を受けたが、今回はツアーで結束を強めた新メンバーによる再出発作品という感じ。

まずは音のバランスが良い。特にJ・ロメンゾのベースはD・エレフソンの「縁の下の力持ち」という風情とは全く違う存在感を放っている。その分、ドラムの自己主張はN・メンツァに比べると控えめかもしれないけど（下手という意味ではない）。

テンポに関しては初期の方がスピーディーな曲が多かったが、エッジの効いたギター・リフ、ソロは健在であり、まさにメガデス〜D・ムステインにしか作りえない楽曲が揃っている。ヤワになったどころか、未だにキラー・リフ、キラー・ソロのアイディアが尽きないD・ムステインの頭脳には感服する他ない。

メロウな部分はラクーナ・コイルのクリスティーナとのデュエットという形でリ・レコーディングされた8くらいでしか感じさせないが、アルバムの構成上、こういうバランス感覚は、さすがに油断というか、そつがない。

　このアルバムは発売前から原点回帰などと騒がれ、スラッシュ好きの方は期待しただろう。
　それを期待すると肩すかしをくらうかもしれない。
　しかし、決して駄作ではないと最初に断言しておく。

　まず、ムステインと新ギタリストのグレン・ドローヴァーとの相性は良く、マーティーがいた黄金時代の充実度を思い起こす。
　まさにインテレクチュアルの名に相応しいリフがほぼ全曲で聴ける。
　
　そして、これまた新任のベーシスト、ジェイムズやドローヴァー兄のプレイ振りもしっかりしている。

　相変わらず知的なギターソロもあり、ムステインの歌い方もさらに渋みを増した。

　ＳＬＡＹＥＲや初期ＭＥＴＡＬＬＩＣＡ、そして初期、中期ＭＥＧＡＤＥＴＨとはまた違ったサウンドだが、聴く価値は大いにある。
　ひょっとすると、「唄うデイヴ・ムステイン」となってからの最高傑作かもしれない。

最初、本作品を1回通して聴いた時「えっ?」って思ったんですが(自分だけ?!)聴けば聴くほど味が出てくるアルバムですね。
さすが、スラッシュメタルの代表格!駄作は作りません(過去にリリースした『RISK』は、かなり批判されましたが、アレはアレなりに良いんですよ)
テクニックは言わずもかな最強です!
デイヴ師匠の歌声は、長年ライヴなどで培ってきただけに、渋みが増しましたね。
セルフカヴァー曲“A TOUT LE MONDE(SET ME FREE)”での女性ヴォーカリストの起用は正解ですよね。
名曲が、より素晴らしさを主張してます。
このアルバムを良く思わなかった人は、何回も聴いてみて下さい!
