eastern youthや怒髪天、DMBQといった同郷の盟友バンド達と共に札幌に揺るぎないロックシーンを築き上げた彼らが、FUGAZIの来日公演での共演をきっかけに上京したのは1991年。それ以降、ROCKETFROM THE CRYPT、BECK、FLAMING LIPS、RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINEといった海外アーティストからのラヴ・コールに応え、その地位を不動のものにしていく。また、彼らに対する評価は日本のミュージシャンからも絶大な支持を得ている。'99年にトリビュート・アルバムがメジャー、インディーズからそれぞれ発売されたことからも、その人気の高さが窺えるだろう。
メジャー盤には浅野忠信とChara、曽我部恵一、EYE(BOREDOMS)、GREAT3、EL-MALOが、インディーズ盤にはHi-STANDARD、NAHTらがそれぞれ参加している。そして、NUMBER GIRLや54-71、the band apartらとスプリット・ツアーを敢行するなど、ジャンルや年齢の差を超えている。これだけ幅広いミュージシャンらと関係があるのは彼らが愛され続けている証拠である。
結成から20周年を迎えた彼らが提示した新たなる"イッポ"=最新作『ギタリストを殺さないで』は、この不安定な世界情勢までも吹き飛ばしてくれるぐらいのマスターピースであることは既に決定している。

ブッチャーズ２年ぶりのニューアルバム。

そもそも前作は正に４人になって最高潮！みたいなテンションの高い作品だったが
インストの多さも含め実験的な作品であった。なので本質が見えにくかったのだ。
しかし今作、正にその実験が実を結んだ傑作である。隙が全くない。

まずこのアルバムは全ての曲において同じ空気が流れている。
ここ数作はそういう感じではなかったので３人の頃に近いのかな。
また前作はサビを丸々田渕ひさ子が歌う曲がありそれが個人的に微妙だったのだが
今回はその不満点も解消、あくまでメインでは歌わず違和感は消えた。
２人で歌う｢ギタリストを殺さないで」も次第にハマって来てしまった。

このアルバムを聴いて思うことはやはりブッチャーズのロックは唯一無二であり、
次第にメディアからの注目度が下がってる今、伝えなければいけないということ。
特に「yeah#1」なんかは絶対キャッチーだと思う。確かにゴツゴツとしてるが
サビの「Yeah」を繰り返す所の開放感が非常に良いのだ。
またブッチャーズは地味ながら色々な人々がリスペクトの意を上げているので
その才能を確認する意味でも是非。バッキバキのロックンロールが鳴ってます。

なぜ、こんなにもうるさく、こんなにもざっくりしているのに、こんなにも気持いいのだろう。不思議だ。
常に何らかの雑音が鳴っている、時に吉村英樹の声さえも雑音かもしれない、しかしこの音のカーテンに包まれると、安心すら感じる。
自分をとりまく何かから守ってもらっているような感覚。
いままで幾多のロック音楽を聴いてきたが、こんなことを感じるバンドは他にいなかった。
なぜ、日本人は、彼らの音を、歌を聴かないのか。なぜ、日本人は、彼らの存在を大切にしないのか。
それもまた、僕には不思議なのだ。

ビートルズが「Yeah Yeah Yeah」と日本の音楽文化を開国してから40数年。
未だに「邦楽ロック=ださい」と偏見を持つ奴がいる。
かくいう自分もそうだった。
そんな過去の僕を葬ってくれたのがブッチャーズ。
日本人でもこんな詩を唄えるんだ。
日本人でもこんな風にギターを唄わせられるんだ。

赤ん坊だった僕の世界は広がった。
イースタンユースやバンドアパート……
日本にはすげぇバンドがいっぱいだ。
僕を待っていてくれた。

音楽は世界のことば。
今日も僕らは「Yeah」と叫ぶ。

……レビューになってないね、これ(笑)
とにかく「洋楽派」にも聴いて欲しいバンドです。
(洋/邦で価値観が分けられるのが、日本音楽界のおかしいとこだこどもん)
