英国を代表するプログレッシヴ・ロックバンドPorcupine Treeの初のトータル・コンセプトアルバム「Fear Of A Blank Planet」。常に進化し続けるその音楽性をして便宜上プログレッシヴ・ロックバンドと評価するしかない彼らが、前作「Deadwing」で完成させたヘヴィ・メタルとプログレッシヴ・ロックの融和を更に孤高の極みに近づけた傑作。もはやPocupine Treeというそのバンド名がそのジャンル名だとしか言いようが無いその音楽性は、叙情性、攻撃性、そして危険性という考えられるべき全ての要素を内包している。また、バンドの頭脳であるスティーヴ・ウィルソンによる不気味なほど現実社会に肉薄する歌詞も特徴。

前作DEADWINGを購入した切っ掛けはLazarusのPVでした。
若干鬱気味ではありながら、暖かさを感じさせるこの曲は2006年のフェイバリットとなりました。

でニューアルバムですが、前作程音圧は感じないもののその暗鬱さは格段にレベルアップしていると感じました。
POPとは言い難い楽曲ばかりですが、初期PinkFloidの持っていた斜めに構えた感覚を受け継いでいる、そんな気がしました。

入り口としては前作のDEADWINGからが妥当でしょうが、暗鬱音楽の愛でる方々はぜひ一度こちらのアルバムをチェック下さい。

前作『デッドウイング』で日本デビューを飾ったポーキュパインツリーの通算14作目

メディア、ドラッグ、ゲームに溺れる引きこもり少年をテーマにしたバンド初のトータルコンセプトアルバム


前作でのキャッチーさは後退して幾分地味な印象はあるものの独特の世界に引きずり込む手腕はさすが。噛めば噛むほど味が出る

メタル的なダイナミズムと叙情的なメロディでうまく緩急を付ける構成力はキングクリムゾンのロバート・フリップ総帥が惚れるのも頷けます(ゲストとしても参加。ラッシュのアレックス・ライフソン、ハットフィールド&ザ・ノース、ブラッフォードのディヴ・スチュワートも参加してます)

18分近い大作3がハイライト。前作の『アライヴィング・サムホエア・バット・ノット・ヒア』と共に近代プレグレ大作の名曲です。出来るだけ良い音で鑑賞して頂きたい芸術作品です
