韓国の歴史にキチンと向き合った、実際の生活感と時代背景のある名作です。どちらからというと、これまで韓国では、「あこがれ、豊かさ、生活のスマートさ」といったものが映画で表現されてきました。そして、それは日本の多くの世代の誰の心にもある「懐かしさ、美しい思い出」を呼び起こし、韓流ブームとなりました。しかし、「夏物語」は現実に足の着いた物語です。韓流が本物になっていく出発点だと思います。いずれは、こういった作品がアカデミー賞にもノミネートされていくでしょう。

独裁政権下にあった1969年当時の韓国が舞台。ソウルの大学に通うお坊ちゃんのソギョン（イ・ビョンホンさん）は夏休みにボランティアとして農作業を手伝うために田舎に滞在するが、そこで出会った地元娘のジョンイン（スエさん）と恋仲になる。２人でソウルへ行くことにするが、彼女の背負った暗い過去が２人の仲を引き裂こうとする。

全編を通して重苦しい内容という訳ではなく、前半はソギョンがジョンインの気を引こうとするお茶目な行為などに頬が緩む所がいくつもあり、楽しく観ることが出来ます。特に、ぴちぴちのパンツとTシャツを着て、髪を七三分けにしたイ・ビョンホンさんは、あまりに当時の大学生の雰囲気がよく出ているため、その姿を見ているだけで笑いが込上げます。やんちゃ坊主のように歯を見せて笑う表情なども若々しいです。スエさんは、「ファミリー」に出ていた時よりもグンと大人っぽい魅力が出てきたように感じました（農村の娘役にしてはちょっと垢抜けしすぎた印象はありましたが）。

後半に入って、ジョンインの過去が明らかになってくる当りから、急に重苦しい雰囲気が漂ってきます。この時代を扱う韓国映画に必ずと言っていい程に登場する警察での取調べシーンは、恋愛映画には似つかわしくないような乱暴さがあり、一気に気分が滅入りました。結末が近づくにつれて「２人を一緒にしてあげて下さい」と半ば祈るような気持ちで観ていました…。ソギョンの一途な想いに涙する純愛映画の部類に入る作品だとは思いますが、あの時代の政治情勢を反映して、重苦しい余韻が残る作品に仕上がっています。

「甘い人生」以来１年ぶりの主演作品です。
久しぶりという感じですが,１００を越える出演依頼の中から厳選したと言うだけあってかなり上質な作品に仕上がっています。
舞台は１９６９年，軍事独裁政権，学生運動,スパイ罪など，当時の社会情勢をリアルに織り込みながら，学生ユン・ソギョン（イ・ビョンホン）と農村の娘ソ・ジョイン（スエ）との悲恋を描いています。
ビョンホン自身がインタビューで「誤った反共教育を受けた世代」と述べているように，当時の人々の感情をどのように表現していくのかが見物です。
