すばらしい映画でした。なんともこの一言につきます。作品の構成や映像、すべて良かったです。それから、私が常々知る武士とは、ちがうお侍を描いてくれたこともとてもよかった。特に期待して見た映画ではありませんでしたし、時代劇をわざわざ見ることもあまりありませんが、映画の世界に完全に引き込まれていました。私が受けた感動をどう言葉表していいかわかりません。

2002年11月2日公開。藤沢周平の短編『たそがれ清兵衛』・『竹光始末』・『祝い人助八』を山田洋次のスタッフが仕上げた大傑作。日本アカデミー賞最優秀賞他12部門受賞、キネマ旬報ベスト・テン第1位、毎日映画コンクール日本映画大賞etc・・・・なにしろ日本映画の賞という賞を総なめにした作品。
色調がダークで山形県庄内地方や長野県望月町、秋田県角館町など日本の『原風景』が一貫して背後にある中、真田広之・宮沢りえ・田中泯が素晴らしい演技を見せてくれる。
『たそがれ清兵衛』という生き方、これは実に現代社会の荒野を徒手空拳で生きている男にはじんとくるものがある。多くは『平侍』であるところの僕らが、二人の娘と老婆という家族のために、『つきあい』もなく定時早々に帰る生き方というのをできるだろうか?それは実に『強い生き方』でなかなかできる人はいない。多くはただ漠然として曖昧模糊な『つきあい』をすることを専らとし、それができることが第一義のように何十年も過ごしているのが普通で、ある時急に会社に棄てられるのである。それを運がいいとか悪いとかで片づけておしまいである。
しかし、『たそがれ清兵衛』は違う。自ら信ずるものを信じ生きて行く。朋江(宮沢りえ)への想いを打ち明け、余吾善右衛門(田中泯)の討手として出かけるシーンは、無理難題な社命を完遂すべく命ぜられた現代の『平侍』に通ずるものがある。
最後の余吾善右衛門(田中泯)との一騎打ちのシーンは秀逸だ。これほどのシーンは久しぶりに見た気がする。

岸恵子のナレーションが吹き抜ける時代の風を見事に表現して行く。これほどの映画はそうは観られないぞ。

静かな時間。
温かな日常。
優しいふれあい。
そして、娘たちの成長を見守りながら心清からに過ごす清兵衛。
彼には欲がない。
一日一日を心豊かに過ごせればそれでいい。
多くは望まない。
もちろん誰だって貧乏は嫌だけど、できればお金持ちがいいけれど、生きていく上で必要なお金があればいい。

何気ない日々の大切さや、家族のふうわりとした温かさ、人と人とのコミュニケーションに癒される映画です。
いつも真っ直ぐな瞳で相手を見つめる清兵衛の前では誰もが心を開いてしまいます。
確かにあんなに男前な貧乏武士は存在しないのかも知れません。

映画はあくまでも映画です。
娯楽のためにあるのです。
そこに何を感じようと観た人の自由です。
私はこの映画に「癒し」と「優しさ」を感じます。
だから、ちょっと落ち込んだときや心がトゲトゲしてるなと思った時に何度も観ては真田広之の深い懐に癒されています。
