　カバー集とはいうのは、謙遜であろうか。オリジナルアルバムと考えていい。
　１曲目の「アー・ユー・エクスペリアンス」から完全に曲はパティのものになっている。まるで別の曲。「ウィズイン・ユー・ウィズアウト・ユー」なんていう驚きの曲も入っているが、これも、元の曲と肩を並べるくらい素晴らしい出来である。全ての曲は解体され、パティの鋭い感性で曲中の最もロックなるものを抽出され、新たに構築しなおされている。
　アメリカン、ブリティッシュ、６０Ｓ、７０Ｓと幅広い選曲となっているが、好きな曲を選んだと言うより、彼女が今最も表現したい事を表す曲を選んだものだろう。パティの懐メロソング集では決して無い。
　パティはまだロックしているのである。音楽を聴いて身震いを憶えるなんてここ何十年も何百年も無かった。
　ちなみに私は、日本盤を買ったが、歌詞も記載されておらず（パティの意向らしい。一曲一曲にパティのコメントがある）、もちろん対訳も無い。お高い日本盤を買うより輸入盤で良かったかなとも思っている。ご参考に。

　3月12日にニューヨークのウォルドルフ・アストリア・ホテルで行われた「The 2007 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame」授賞式に、パティ・スミスが居並ぶスターを前に「People Have A Power」を演奏した。その時ストーンズのキース・リチャーズを従えていて、最高にパワフルで、とてもロックしていた。
　そのストーンズも入っており、古いのや新しいの、珠玉の名曲集である。

クールで尖ったイメージを勝手に持っていたアーティストですが、歳を重ねたカバー集はどんな感じになるのだろうと思い購入。ティアーズ・フォー・フィアーズなんて意外な選曲もあり興味がありました。
全体としては抑えめで、「そーら、良い歌でしょう？」と語りかけてくるというよりもぐぐっと一人で歌っているような気がしました。パティ・スミスの人生を聞いているというか。
そういう意味ではロックな姿勢は変わらないのかな？
