フリッツ・ラング監督の『メトロポリス』に並ぶSF作品。月に金鉱があると予言したマンフェルト教授。彼の予言は科学者たちに馬鹿にされるが、彼は真剣に月へ行くことを目論んでいる。やがて彼の理論に関心を持つ企業家がひとり、またひとりと現れ…。

月には金が埋蔵されていて、やがてロケットが月まで飛ぶ日が来るだろうと30年前に予言したマンフェルト教授。ほかの学者は馬鹿にする中、ヘリウスという若者は教授を支援した。ほかにもエンジニアのヴィンデガー、その婚約者で天文学者のフリーデが計画に参加し…。

フリッツ・ラングがSF大作「メトロポリス」、そして「スピオーネ」を撮り、次に手がけたSF大作映画です。
独ではその年で最もヒットした映画だったそうです。
そのわりに、ラングの映画群の中では評価は低いようです。
脚本は「ドクトル・マゼブ」「メトロポリス」「スピオーネ」のハルボウ、主演は「スピオーネ」と同様マウルス×フリッチュです。

プリントの状態は良好です。
紀伊國屋さんのクリティカル・エディションですので、ムルナウ財団の復元プリントを使用しています。
古典映画を見慣れた方には全くストレスがないと思われます。
付属の小冊子の解説はまずまずですが、特典映像は他のCEのDVDに比べると少々食い足りなさを感じました。

内容としては、評価がイマイチであることも分かる気がします。
なんとなくストーリー展開が短絡的で、ラング監督らしい人間をえぐるような映画ではないように思います。
SF的描写も現在の科学的見地から考えればナンセンスな部分も多いので、そこばかり追えば興ざめするかもしれません。
ですが、この映画を作る際には物理学者をアドヴァイザーに迎えていたということもあり、説得力のある描写も多々あります。
特にロケットの打ち上げから、ロケットの中での描写はなかなか真に迫ったものがあるように思います。（いかに非現実的な描写でも、当時の学説にそったものになっているようです。月に空気があるということも当時は実しやかな学説があったようです。）

とにかく、欠点はあるものの、独時代のラング監督の力量は凄まじい。
これほどの大作をサイレントでダレずに見せきるわけですから。
150分なんて今の映画でもダレます。
そういう意味では、やっぱり☆５、古典ファンはやっぱり観ておく方がいいんだろうと思います。
もしはじめてラングの作品を観るのであれば、他にも超有名作品がありますので、そちらを観てから、この作品を観ることをおススメします

他のラング監督作品の超ど級大作と比較すれば、落ちる。が素直に見た場合、かなり興味深い作品であることは間違いない。前半の地球のドラマは、月ロケットのセット意外は面白みに欠ける。ロケットそのものも先頭部分以外はミニチュアである。しかし特筆すべきは、月世界のセットである。白砂を一体どれだけ、使用したか見等がつかないが、途方もない量である。まさにその点では空前の規模であろう。
