元々ダンゴ状の音だったこの作品は
リマスターで楽器の分離がクッキリしました。
1曲目から左右に広がるコーラス！
オリジナルのエピックUS盤LPでもモコモコでしたので
(当時、あえてそういう音にしたのでしょうが)
それに較べればかなりクリアに感じます。
高音キツめ、ではなくあくまで中低音が前に出た
感じなので「この作品特有の味」が生きたリマスターだと
思います。
ただし「以前のダンゴ状態の音が良い！」という方も
いるかも。

いわずもがな。名盤中の名盤。作品は言うことなし。しかし、なんでマイルス・デイビスのオリジナル・ライナーを載せんのじゃ？オリジナル・ジャケ、インナースリーブ、かけ帯とここまで凝っといて、このオチはなんなんだ。。。これがあってこそ当時の時代感や音楽的な拡がりが見えてくるというのに。。。興奮が半減。。。だれが書いたかわからんような新規ライナーなんぞいらん。よって星４つ。ごめん、スライ。

前作"Stand!"がポジティヴな夢への「希望」を描いたアルバムであれば、このアルバムは「絶望」という言葉が1番相応しいかと思う。重く暗澹とした雰囲気がアルバム全体を覆い、ネガティヴな言葉で綴られた歌詞が痛々しいほど突き刺さってくる。一役時代の寵児とまで駆け上がった彼がこの作品を発売するまでに一体何があったのだろうか？それはこの作品が発売された時期と照らし合わせると見えてくるような気がする。公民権運動を率いたMartin Luther King, Jr.（キング牧師）の暗殺や、各地で起こる暴動。ベトナム戦争の激化やゲットーで暮らす黒人達の貧困。様々な社会問題がアメリカで発生していた。"Stand!"にて彼が説いた理想とする世界はそこには無かった。勿論彼が常用していた麻薬の影響もあるだろうけれど、Sly Stoneを絶望と諦めに満ちさせてしまう現実がこのアルバムを生み出してしまったのでは無いか？と僕は思う。

このアルバムはSly Stoneが殆ど1人で創ったもの。ドラムスに関してはリズムボックスを使用し、その他の楽器演奏は殆ど彼が弾いている。

初めてこのアルバムを聴いた時、とてつもない嫌悪感に襲われた。全体を通して倦怠感に満ち溢れ、これがファンクの名盤か？と思わせるような退屈なビートが鳴り続けていた。そして何よりもそのサウンドは僕を不安にさせた。もう聴く事はないだろうとその時思ったけれど、ふと数日経ってこのアルバムが聴きたくなった。何度かそうして聴いていたら、この不快なサウンドが妙に心地良くなってしまった。この作品は麻薬のような深い中毒性を持ち、ダウナーなノリがもたらす心地良さに、いつの間にか身体が依存してしまっている。これだけポップスとかけ離れた位置にいるアルバムが名盤と呼ばれる理由はそんな危険な魔力を潜めた作品であるからだと僕は思う。
