スライ&ザ・ファミリー・ストーンデビュー40周年記念!名盤の数々が初デジタル・リマスター&ボーナス・トラック(計33曲!うち21曲は未発表曲)を収録したエクスパンデッド・エディション7タイトルに「グレイテスト・ヒッツ」を加えた8タイトルが日本では遂に紙ジャケ化決定! 今作は67年作品。ロックが革新的に表現の可能性を探っていた時期に発売されたEPICからの1stアルバム。SFで結成されたこのバンドは、スライ・ストーンを中心に弟でギターのフレディ・ストーン、妹でキーボードのロージー・ストーン、いとこでベースのラリー・グラハムらによる7人編成で、当時としては珍しい黒人と白人の混成でした。ロックを核にしながらR&Bを中心に様々な音楽要素を取り入れ、貪欲に新しい音楽を創造していくスタイルは既に出来上がっており、混沌としながらも、ブレイク寸前の奔放で溌剌としたエネルギーが溢れた作品.。

Sly & The Family Stoneのデヴュー作"Whole New Thing"。後に"Stand!"そして"There's Riot Goin' On"という大名盤を発表し、一役時代の寵児となった彼らの最初の作品。
メンバー構成は、Sly StoneことSylvester Stewartを中心に、Slyの弟Freddie Stewartがギター、妹Rose Stewartがピアノを担当。その他トランペットのCynthia Robinson、ベースのLarry Graham、ドラムスにGreg Errico、サックスにJerry Martiniという7人。何よりも特徴的なのが白人黒人の混成バンドであり、当時そういった形態を持つバンドは未だかつて無かった。そして生み出される音楽は、白人音楽の象徴でもあるロックミュージックを核としてリズム&ブルースやドゥワップ等の黒人音楽の要素を取り入れた新しいサウンドだった。

新しさ、そして何よりも自由なそのスタイルに象徴されるように、新鮮で今にも新しい何かが生まれてきそうな期待感が溢れている作品だ。そして荒削りで前々洗練されていないのだけれど、今にも爆発しそうなパワーとテンションに溢れ、その空気に浸るだけで心の中がワクワクとした気分に満ちてくる。"Stand!"等の名盤とはやはり比べられるものではないけれど、このアルバムに溢れるポジティヴな気持ちは間違い無く聴いている人達に良いテンションを与えてくれる。

僕は一曲目の"Underdog（負け犬の意）"が好きで、この曲が持つ勢いとオーラにいつもパワーを与えてもらう。他にも"Turn Me Loose"で見せるSlyの少しイカれたシャウトや、ブルージーな低音でLarryが歌う"Let Me Hear It from You"等聴き所多い作品。

スライ&ザ・ファミリー・ストーンの一枚目のアルバムがコレ。平均点に到達してはいるものの、どの曲もインパクトに欠ける。聴き所はそれなりにあるのだが、ガツンとくる曲がなくなんとももどかしい。爆発寸前という言葉がしっくりくるアルバム。でもこのアルバムはスライの歴史の一部であり、爆発の布石でもある。

　スライと言うと「スタンド！」での爆発と思われがちであるが、この１ｓｔですでにその爆発は始まっている。
　スライ&ザ・ファミリー・ストーンは黒人、白人、男、女入り乱れてのグループである。そして、リーダーのスライ自身、出生、生い立ちから黒人社会というよりさまざまな人種が入り乱れる中で育っている。さらにこの人は、ＤＪをしていたこともあり、さまざまな音楽文化に接していたのであろう。こういった事が原因であるのか、この１ｓｔにして、ファンクではなく、どちらかと言えばロック的な音作りである。それも、ウッド・ストックに象徴されるようなサイケデリック・ロックエラの手触りである。サイケデリック・ロックどころか、この時、すでにコラージュというか実験音楽的な楽曲も入れているあたり、かなり風変わりなミュージシャンである。
　ＪＢなどいわゆる黒人音楽とはまったく違った音楽であり、ファンキーと言うのを期待すると肩透かしを食うのがこのスライというミュージシャンであり、これは記念すべき１ｓｔ。ダンスファン、ファンクファンよりもロックファンにお勧めの一枚である。
