コルトレーンとバレルのバトルは勿論良いけど、ポールチェンバースが淡々と刻むリズムが心地よい、ラストの「ビッグポール」もお勧めです。

1958年3月7日録音。表題からすると2人のデュオ・アルバムのような気がするが、実際はデュオなのは4『Why Was I Born?』1曲だけで、残りはトミー・フラナガン(p)、ポール・チェンバース(b)、ジミー・コブ(ds)というリズム部隊が支えるアルバムだ。このアルバムのカバー・デザインは当時としてはかなりステキだとぼくは思うのだが残念ながらデザイナーは誰かという記述がない。

この時期のコルトレーンは自身のアルバムでも様々な組み合わせのミュージシャンと録音を重ねていて、その上デュオでアルバムを作ることも多かった。その中でもこのアルバムとセロニアス・モンクとのデュオ・アルバム(1957-58年録音)がぼくは特に好みだ。コルトレーンにしてみればメンバーを様々にスクランブルさせながらアルバムを量産し、徐々に自分の目指す音楽に最適なメンバーと奏法を構築していたのだろう。その完成型が『あの』カルテットということになるのだろう。

曲はトミー・フラナガンのオリジナルが2曲、ケニー・バレルのオリジナルが1曲。いずれもすばらしい演奏だ。特に一騎打ちになっている4『Why Was I Born?』は名演だと思う。コルトレーン好きには外せないアルバムだ。

当時はプレスティジで数々のオールスターセッションが組まれ、さまざまな組み合わせにより魅力的なレコーディングが試みられていった。コルトレーンとバレルはともに当時の売り出し中で、急速に台頭してきた新進プレイヤーとして注目されていた。ギターとテナーの組み合わせといっても、ロリンズのコンボのように、ギターがピアノレスによるリズム楽器としてバッキングを務めるというケースが多く、このアルバムのように両者が対等な立場でインタープレイを繰り広げるのは意外と珍しい。バレルのブルース・フィーリングあふれるシングルトーンはリズム楽器というよりホーン楽器的な魅力を前面に打ち出しているといえよう。もちろんジャズ・ギターはホーン奏者的演奏を試みたチャーリー・クリスチャンという革新者によってビ・バップ（モダン・ジャズ）の成立に大きく貢献した事実はあるが、総合的な機能を持ったギターがホーン奏者と対等に張り合うにはやはりバレルのような個性とオリジナリティをもったギタリストの登場を待つしかないであろう。また、コルトレーンにとっても、やがてこれら対外試合で力をつけ、大きく飛翔するための大切な腕試しの時期であった。その意味でも重要で新鮮なセッションだといえよう。
