ウエス・モンゴメリーの代表作といえばフルハウスやロードソング、ハーフノートなどいくつかの傑作を挙げることができるが、ジャズのエッセンスを真に伝えるアルバムといえばこれが最右翼であろう。ピアノがトミー・フラナガンというところもミソである。トミ・フラこそ傑作請負人。ロリンズのサキ・コロ、コルトレーンのジャイアント・ステップス、J.Jのブルー・トロンボーンなど、それぞれのプレイヤーの畢生の傑作のサポートをしている稀有なピアニストである。それにしてもここにおけるウエスは神がかっている。エアジンにおける脅威のテクニック、D-ナチュラル・ブルース、ウエスト・コースト・ブルースにおけるブルース・フィーリング、ポルカ・ドッツ・アンド・ムーンビームス、風と共に去りぬなどスタンダードでの歌心。どれをとってもこれまでにないジャズ・ギターの新境地を聴かせてくれる。オクターブ奏法やコード奏法など多彩なテクニックで演奏の幅を広げ、あたかもホーン奏者のような存在感を示したのである。夭折しただけに後のイージーリスニング路線に早く転換したことがやや悔やまれるが、ウエスの精神は後のジャズギターに大きな影響を及ぼしたといえよう。

ウエス・モンゴメリーと言えば、Ａ＆Ｍレコードからリリースされたビートルズナンバーなどのイージーリスニングジャズのアルバムが有名で、また売れているが、このアルバムはウエスの原点であり代表作。１９６０年発売の、このアルバムで一躍ジャズ・ギターの頂点に立った。ギターは独学、譜面も読めなかったウエスだが、独自のオクターヴ奏法から生み出される音はダイナミック。ピアノは「名盤の陰にトミフラあり」と言われるトミー・フラナガン。一曲目、ソニー・ロリンズ作曲の「エアージン」、二曲目はビル・エヴァンスの演奏でも有名な「ポルカ・ドット・アンド・ムーンビームス」と美しい曲が並ぶ。余韻の長いメロディアスなギター・プレイだ。わずか４３歳で他界したウエス。代表作であり、最高傑作でもある。夜、お酒を片手に聴くと、しんみりしてくる。で、この値段はうれしい。（松本敏之）
