　映画「スウィング・ガールズ」で、竹中直人扮するウンチクｊａｚｚオヤジが、自室でジャケット片手に興奮気味にその魅力を語っていたのが今作。１９６１年７月１６日、ＮＹ「ファイブ・スポット」での、エリック・ドルフィー＆ブッカー・リトルによる伝説の一夜。その息苦しいほど酸欠状態なまでに吹きまくる魂の咆哮、マル・ウォルドロンも巻き込んでの果てる事のない狂熱的なせめぎあいと絡み合い、ハード・バップとフリージャズのボーダー・ラインを越境してしまったような解放感、正に圧巻で怒涛のセッションに、竹中ならずとも、唾気をとばして絶賛したくなる出来栄え。「歴史的名盤」、と言うフレーズはそう安々とは使うべき類のモノではないと思うが、今アルバムはその称号に相応しい１枚。ドルフィーもリトルも若くしてその命を散らしてしまったが、ｊａｚｚへの飽くなき探究心が存分に窺える傑作。必聴！。

これほど熱気を感じるアルバムもそうない。ライブである点を差し引いてもエリック・ドルフィー以下の爆発的な情念、エネルギーは止められない。５０年代からチャールス・ミンガスのグループで前衛的な活動を展開していたドルフィーと盟友マル・ウォルドロンが全体の雰囲気をお膳立てし、若き天才ブッカー・リトルの火を吐くようなトランペットがかぶさる。さらにヘビー級のベーシスト、リチャード・デイビスとエド・ブラックウェルのリズムが煽りたてる。映画スイングガールズで竹中直人演ずる教師がジャズのすばらしさを説くときにこのアルバムがフリー・ジャズの凄さの象徴として紹介したときは嬉しかった。リトルとドルフィーはこのあと立て続けに夭逝してしまい、夢の共演は文字通り真夏の夜の出来事と化した。が、若者たちの青春が渦巻く熱演は人々の記憶から決して消えることなく、次なる新たなジャズの胎動へと誘っていくのである。惜しむらくはドラムがややイモっぽいブラックウェルでなく、シャープなトニー・ウイリアムスかロイ・ヘインズあたりだとさらに面白かったと感じるのは僕だけではないだろう。
