製作されたのは、なんと88年前。ヨーロッパでいえば第一次大戦が終わった年、日本の大正8年（明治が終わって7年目）。それでいて、めくるめく斬新さ。
今日ではよく目にする筋書きですが、二転三転してラスト、これで本当に終わりなのか？　と思わせる、その表情がミステリアス。
歪んだ街並みなどのセットは私には童話的に見え、同時代の作家カフカの「変身」なんかの雰囲気を連想しました。

サイレント映画で、英語字幕入り。日本語字幕をON/OFFにすることができます。
古い映画にありがちな、表情や動作が唐突に変化して違和感を与えるところもあります。しかし、この作品がいつでも好きなときに鑑賞できるのはすばらしい。

　ドイツ表現主義の傑作が５００円で買えるのですから、ＷＨＤジャパンのラインナップは素晴らしいです。モノクロ、無声映画で画質もあまりよくないのですが、ゆがんだセットの中で起こる話は悪夢を見ているようなリアリティがあり、ストーリーも役者も映像も最高です。眠り男ツェザーレの殺人場面などは今見ても恐ろしく、必見です。

説明の必要もない作品だが、一つだけ。
ＤＶＤ化の際の問題だと思うのだが、再生中に画面が制止してしまう個所が一つだけあります。価格を考えると文句は言えませんが一寸残念です。なので星一つだけ減点。
