1916〜1922年のアイルランドが舞台。英国植民地アイルランドでは独立の気運が高まり、中でもマイケル・コリンズ率いる武闘派はテロを以って独立を勝ち取ろうとしていた。

独立運動の中心人物イーモン=デ・ヴァレラ(後の初代アイルランド首相)は当初同志としてコリンズを認めていたが、コリンズの冷徹で容赦ないテロ路線にヴァレラの気持ちは徐々に離れていく。
独立運動の中心人物から支持が得られなくなったテロ指導者がどうなるかは想像に難くない。

英国によって長年支配されてきた、アイルランド苦悩の歴史を重厚に描き出した傑作。テロ組織として悪名高いIRAが、合法政党シン・フェイン党によって後援されているという嘘の様な本当の話など、時代背景が複雑ではありますが、単純に「独立は力で勝ち取るべきか」という主題が分かっていれば楽しめる作品となっています。

出演がリーアム・ニースン、ジュリア・ロバーツ、アラン・リックマンなどやけに豪華です。日本国内では全くヒットせず劇場公開が1ヶ月ほどで終わってしまった作品ですが、中身は大変良く出来ています。

名作。マイケル・コリンズという人物にスポットを当てた時点でこの映画の面白さはある
程度保証されたといえるのでは。彼のやっている事はまさしくテロである。しかし、この
映画を見た人はコリンズを単なるテロリストとは思わないはずだ。
テロは悪だ、というのは容易い。映画でもエーモン・デ・ヴァレラはアイルランド共和国
軍による蜂起行動を主張し、コリンズのテロ作戦を苦々しく思っている。だが、騎士道も
武士道もへったくれもなく、かつ圧倒的に優勢な軍隊を持つ相手に対して戦う場合、あな
たはどうやって戦うのか、コリンズの選択か、デ・ヴァレラの考えか。
「戦争は政治手段の延長線上にある」というが、テロもまた政治手段の延長線上にある時
に、社会に訴える有効な手段なのかも知れない。コリンズはヴァレラを常にボスとして考
えていた。それはヴァレラを顔とした政治集団としての体面なくしては、自分のテロ作戦
はただの犯罪集団の暴力となることを理解していたのだろう。
コリンズにとっては、ヴァレラの政治活動があってこそテロ作戦の成功があった。だが、
ヴァレラはそれを理解してくれなかった。それがコリンズの不幸であった。

大ファンのU2, ブームタウン・ラッツの祖国の独立、未だ解決されていない北アイルランド問題の原点でも分るかなと思って、観ました。題材がゆえに、もう少し悲壮感がいっぱいの映画かなと予想してみたのですが、あまり歴史的な重み程が伝わってこなかったのは、主演のリーアム・ニーソンがまるでスターウォーズのハン・ソロ船長張りの大活躍（なんか雰囲気が似てる）だったからだろうかと思いました。だからと言って作品をけなしている訳じゃないです。アイルランドに興味のある方、必見の映画だと言えます。
