平成ウルトラ前２作とは違う世界観のもと、２大ウルトラマンをレギュラー化し、根源的破滅招来体という謎の存在との戦いを続き物的に描くなど、過去のテレビシリーズにない試みがなされた意欲作。
オープニングで陽光を背に飛行する戦闘機、大地を吹き飛ばして着地するウルトラマンなど、凝った特撮カットが多いのも見所。
今ではウルトラもすべてビデオ撮りになってしまったが、本作はまだ特撮がフィルム撮りで行われており、まさにティガ以降のノウハウを集大成した作品と言える。

陸・海・空・女性（？）という複数の防衛チームやＡＷＡＣＳ輸送機、六角柱型に折りたたまれて収納されるメカなどの凝った設定。明らかに、キャプテンスカーレットへのオマージュであろう雲海上の浮上基地など、好きな人にはツボにくるネタも多い。大河的展開がやや間延び気味な難点はあるが、それを上回る魅力を持つ、ある種の頂点を極めたとも言える豪華なウルトラマン。

オンエア当時には数話しか観ていなかったので、今回のDVD-BOXで初めて全話観た。
感心するのは、レギュラーキャストが非常に多いにもかかわらず個々のキャラがしっかり立っていて、見せ場も用意されていること。防衛軍のメンバーが一部スーパーエリート(?)に限定されていたそれまでのシリーズに比べて組織としてのシアリティがぐっと増している感じだ。ストーリーもSFテイストで、年長者が観ても大いに楽しめる。近年のウルトラシリーズは苦し紛れの先祖がえりをして、妙に子供目線になってしまったが、こういう骨太なドラマ作りにまたチャレンジして欲しいものだ。
特典映像に主役の二人、吉岡毅志・高野八誠の対談が入っているのもうれしい。ドラマの内容そのままに二人は親友だそうで、これまたドラマの設定そのままに高野八誠・石田裕加里のご両人が結婚して司会役が吉岡毅志というのはとても素敵な話だ。
これまで平成ウルトラマンは『ティガ』がダントツだと思っていたけれど、『ガイア』のドラマ構成はさらに上をいくだろう。M78星雲からの使者という些か陳腐化した設定はリセットして、再び「人間ウルトラマン」という平成ウルトラマンの出発点に戻ることを切望する。

ティガ、ダイナと続いた平成ウルトラシリーズ最新作。当時、僕は小学校に入学したばかりでした。ティガ、ダイナもリアルタイムで見てたが、前の二作よりもガイアは記憶の隅に焼き付いて、離れない。それだけ当時の僕には印象的な番組であったのだ。
スプリーム・バージョンが初登場した回、ゴキグモンの回、ガンQの秘密が明らかになった回、そして、最終3部作が好きです。
この作品では、ガイアとアグル、二人のウルトラマンが登場しますが、このウルトラマンガイアと言う作品は、二人のウルトラマン、どちらかが欠けたら、成り立たないと言っても過言ではない程、二人のウルトラマンにスポットが当てられてました。この二人のウルトラマンのドラマを見事に描き切ったのが、このガイアと言う作品が成功した要因と僕は思います。
しかし、二人のウルトラマンの話だけが、ガイアの魅力ではありません。主人公、我夢の成長、我夢を取り巻くXIGの隊員達、随所随所に出てくる民間人、それぞれのドラマが丁寧に描かれたのも成功だと思います。そして、それに反する特撮シーンのクオリティの高さも特筆すべき点です。
とにかく、ウルトラマンガイアは僕の中では、永遠に輝くヒーローです。
