８８年のロンドン、タウン＆カントリークラブでのライブです。
リズムギターの元ラジエーターズ・フロム・スペースのフィリップ・シェヴロンがとても格好いい。スティーヴ・リリィ・ホワイトやジョー・ストラマーが｢彼はリズムギターの達人。とても真似出来ない｣と絶賛するそんなシェヴロンの演奏「THOUSANDS ARE SAILING」「TURKISH SONG OF THE DAMNED」はとても熱い。アコーディオンのジェームズ・ファーンリーと共にとても目立っています。特に「セイリング」は前の歌からの感情を持ち越していて全員がとても素晴らしい演奏。一番上手いと言われるバンジョーのテリー・ウッズの演奏もいいというかメンバー全員がどの歌でもとても楽しそうにありのままの姿で生き生きと演奏しています。
スローなホーンセクションで始まり一転して躍動する「FIESTA」なんて本当にカーニバルみたいでティン・ホイッスルのスパイダー・トレイシーはゲストのカースティ・マッコールとぐだぐだになって踊るやら、紙ふぶきやシェインがかけたスプレーで身体中、滅茶苦茶になってステージをくるくる回りながら床に転がって演奏するメンバー達が本当に楽しそう。その中で飄々としたシェインがまた彼らしい。ドラムのアンドリュー・ランケンのハーモニカで始まる「DIRTY OLD TOWN」もゲストのジョー・ストラマーが歌う自身のクラッシュの「LONDON CALLING」でも観客と一体になって躍動している。ラストのシェインはバウロン（アイルランドの太鼓）叩きながらの「THE IRISH ROVER」まで本当に楽しい。アンコールでのゲストのリンヴァル・ゴールディングが歌う「A MESSAGE TO YOU」がまたいい。一緒に身体が動いて「a message to you Rudy!」と口ずさんでしまいます。
ジョー・ストラマーはこう言う「シェインはパンク野郎とか、はねっ返りとか言われているけど、彼は２０世紀最高の詩人なんだ」。そんなシェインの歌うカースティ・マッコールとの「FAIRYTALE OF NEWYORK」、そして「LULLABY OF LONDON」「RAINY NIGHT IN SOHO」は情感が伝わって来てとても良いです。
一見ぼうっとして何も考えていないかの様な風貌。彼の代名詞ともなった「堕ちた天使」を元気良く歌い上げた後で、
虚ろな目で「みんなにロマンスを」とモゴモゴ言って、タバコくわえながら
「Down all the years, down all the ways・・」としみじみと歌い始める「RAINY NIGHT IN SOHO」。口元から覗く歯はケンカのせいでしょうかボロボロ。酔いどれ詩人とか言われたシェイン。しかし
「We watched our friends grow up together・・」と歌うその閉じた瞳は何か子供の様に純真になっているかの様に哀しげでもあり、悲しみも喜びもある今を共に生きようといった意志も伝わって来る。なんて温かい音達。なんて美しい。その郷愁溢れるメロディーに乗って、シェーンのしゃがれ声が何か本当に純粋に無垢な声に聞こえてきて、全員の眼が潤んでいる様にも見えます。シェインはなぜか途中からサングラスかけているけどね。私はこの歌がとても好きです。
