Raphael Saadiqと共に作り上げた、ｵﾘｼﾞﾅﾙ2作目(Soul Sessionsはｶｳﾞｧｰｱﾙﾊﾞﾑのためｵﾘｼﾞﾅﾙにはｶｳﾝﾄせず)。

客演にはCommon、そしてｱﾉLauryn Hillまでも表舞台に引きずり出している。ｿﾝｸﾞﾗｲﾃｨﾝｸﾞのﾊﾟｰﾄﾅｰとしてNovel(なんとSolomon Burkeのお孫さんだそうで)も名を連ねている。しかしどのﾋﾞｯｸﾞﾈｰﾑも、Jossの前では単なる引き立て役でしかなさそうだ。というより彼女の存在感が自然とそうさせている。

前作には、明らかに彼女の圧倒的なｳﾞｫｰｶﾙｾﾝｽとｿﾝｸﾞﾗｲﾃｨﾝｸﾞの能力に開きがあった。その点については多くの批判を受けていたのだが、その理由が今作にて明らかになっている。

纏うもの、押し込めるものがなくなった今、彼女の想像を遥かに超える才能を開花させている。誰がここまでの大物だと想像しただろうか。彼女自身にとっての"ｿｳﾙﾐｭｰｼﾞｯｸとはなんたるか"というものを体現したようで、Jossらしい新鮮さや、瑞々しさ、ﾌｧﾝｷｰさで溢れる作りに。生ﾊﾞﾝﾄﾞのｻｳﾝﾄﾞの持つ力強さ、Jossのｿｳﾙに満ち溢れたｳﾞｫｰｶﾙ、決して古臭さを感じさせない楽曲とが、相乗的に作用してｱﾙﾊﾞﾑ全体をﾈｸｽﾄﾚｳﾞｪﾙな作品に引き上げている。

彼女のすべてを賭けて創り上げた作品。聴く者の琴線にﾀﾞｲﾚｸﾄに触れる強さを持っている。

2003年にデビューし、デビュー作がヒットしたジョス・ストーンの3枚目のアルバムです。早々断言しますが、彼女のこのアルバムは大ヒットするでしょう。そして日本でもファギー並みの知名度を得るんじゃないかなぁ。私は彼女の事を2004年の「アルフィー」のサントラで知ったのですが、いい声でソウルのある歌い方をする人だなと思い気に入って聴いていました。もっともそのサントラに参加していたミック・ジャガーも認めていた女性だから当然なんでしょうね。今回のアルバムは19歳！の彼女が全ての曲作りに参加しているそうですが、なかなかいい曲が多い！特に前半の「Music」までの7曲はいいですよ。コモンやローリン・ヒルが参加している曲は彼らの色が出ていていいのですが、他の曲も聴きやすくカッコいいと思います。（このアルバムの曲の流れ、ジャスティン・ティンバレイク、ファギーのアルバムとどこか似ているような気が・・・・・まぁいいか・・・）これからの季節のドライブ・ミュージックにうってつけなんじゃないでしょうか？
それも今回のプロデューサー、ラファエル・サディークという人（元トニ・トニ・トニのメンバーの一人らしい）の功績が大きいと思います。
それにしても19歳でこれだけのアルバムを作ってしまったジョス、次回作はどんな方向に行くのか非常に楽しみです。

ジョス・ストーンの新譜ということですが、前作までのオーガニックさというものが失われていて、その分昨今のヒップホップを多分に取り入れたＲ＆Ｂが展開されています。
中でもローリン・ヒルとの合作は異色の出来。
ローリンのラップが入るところで鳥肌が立ちました。

作品全体を振り返ってみると、歌自体は、カヴァーアルバムの頃から考えると、ずいぶんしっかりしている印象があります。
ソングライティングもずっとうまくなりました。
けれどアルバムトータルで考えるとどうなのかなぁと思います。
ターゲットを今までのオールドソウル、フィリーソウル愛好者からより一般的なブラックミュージック購買層にシフトしたということはわかりますし、プロダクションの端々にいかにもイギリス人らしいノーザンソウルの香りが漂いますが、今までのファンとしては、首をかしげるところがあるのです。
実際、このプロダクションだったら、マーケティングにおける飛び道具的な意味合いで、ＢＥＰかカニエあたりに楽曲提供してもらえばよかったのにと思ったくらいです。

結論として総合点は星三つ。
次回作に期待したいです。
値段の高い日本盤のボーナストラックが結構いいので、輸入版だからといって贔屓目で見れないのがにくいところですね。
