   弟の大学の学費のために盗みに入った邸宅で、誤って女性を殺してしまった剛志。千葉の刑務所に服役中の彼の唯一の支えが弟の直貴から来る手紙。しかし、兄が受刑者というだけで、差別され、仕事も転々とし、恋人にもふられ、夢さえ打ち砕かれてきた直貴。兄を思いながらも、その存在の大きさ、罪の大きさに彼は押しつぶされそうになる。そんな彼が所帯を持った。守らなければならない妻、子どものために、直貴はある決心をした。
   直木賞作家・東野圭吾が描いた小説をTVドラマでおなじみのヒットメイカー生野慈朗が映画化。加害者の家族を主人公にする大胆な試みだが、登場人物の心情にきちんとよりそい、ときには心にグイグイと入り込む演出は、罪を背負って生きる兄弟のドラマに見るものを釘付けにする。陰のある役がよく似合う山田孝之が、兄への思いと妻と子への愛の間で苦しむ直貴を熱演。意外にもさわやかなイメージの玉山鉄二が受刑者の兄を淡々と演じながら、最後で泣かせてくれる。ひとりの人間の犯した罪により、家族がどんなに苦しむか。そこから生まれる差別との闘いのドラマは確かにヘビーだが、弟の怒り、哀しみ、諦めなどの感情がうなりをあげて見る者の感情をゆさぶり、目が離せない 。まさに感動作だ。（斎藤 香）

原作者の東野氏は、自身の作品が映像化されるとき、基本的に何も注文を出さないらしい。
映像に関するプロが良かれと思ってやる変更なら、それを信頼したいというスタンスだそうだ。

この作品では、原作では別の形だったものが「お笑い」というものにアレンジされている。
映画製作中にその話を聞いたとき「変更って言ってもそれは変えすぎだろ！」と思った。
半信半疑のまま、映画館へ足を運んだが、そこで「プロの仕事」を見せつけられた。
この変更は、ただでさえ重い『手紙』という作品に、さらなる深みを付加していた。

原作を読んだことがあって、「あれをお笑いに変えるってどうなのよ？」と思っている方は、必見です。
読んだことのない方は、映像でも原作でも、とにかくどちらかを手にしてください。
双方が、プロの仕事をしていることを思い知るでしょう。

「千の風に乗って」は死者から見た生者へのなぐさめの詩だ。見る側を変えると、今まで見えなかった世界が見えてくる。「手紙」も加害者の家族から見た社会を描いて秀逸だ。山田考之以下全ての出演者が真面目で控えめな好演で、想定に難があるのをカバーしており、好感が持てる。プレミアム版の挿入本もファンには宝物になると思う。

直貴本人は何も悪い事をしていないのに兄貴が強盗殺人犯ってだけで世間は彼を排除しようとする。
見てて凄く腹立たしかったけれど自分ももし近くにそんな境遇の人がいたらどうだろうかと考えたら何とも言えない。
でも自分から進んで親しくしようとは考えないのでは？と思う。
そんな中で由美子や祐輔は直貴の中身だけで彼を受け入れてて凄いなと思う。

この映画で再び山田孝之kunと沢尻エリカchanのコンビが見れて幸せでした★
内容も最高に素晴らしいものでした。

小田和正の「言葉にできない」が映画の良さをバックアップしてくれてますね。
