いくつかのサンプル音源を聴いてパスしてしまうアーティストが年間にいくつかある、
そのほとんどが、聴くべき価値がない物でその時点での判断基準は間違っていないのだが
一年通して１〜２アーティストぐらい良質な音楽を聞き逃す事がたまにある、私にとって
このKings of Leonもそう言うバンドで、このバンドの底なしの才能に気がついたのは
恥ずかしながら２nd発表後１年以上経った頃だった様に記憶している、いわゆるストロークス以降のロックンロールリバイバル組なのだが、私はこの言葉が嫌いで、ロックンロール自体はいつの時代も鳴らされていた訳で死滅した歴史がないにも関わらずリバイバルとはお話に
ならない、メディアが考えた文句だと思うが、疑問を感じてしまう、さてこのＫＯＬの３rdだが、凄い事になっている、１st,2ndはほんの準備運動だったかの様な、つぼを押さえまくった
完璧なロックミュージックが鳴らされている。下手うまを絵に書いた様な、そして極めて
ロックを体現したヴォーカルスタイル、ジャー・ウーブルやＪＪバーネルを彷彿させる
まるでリード楽器の様なBass,やたらと手数が多く曲をガンガン引っ張るDrums,そして極めつけ
は切れ味抜群のオリジナルティー溢れるサイケなギターワーク、その全てが怒涛のように
聴き手に襲い掛かって来て、否が応でもトリップ反応させられてしまう。
個人的な感想だが、今巷で話題騒然のA・モンキーズの２ndより私はこのＫＯＬの３rdの方に
興奮させられてしまった。この作品は間違いなく今年の重要作品と思う。

土臭く、どこか枯れた味わいがありながら圧倒的にセクシーな歌声、抜けが良く気持ちのいいドラム、ウネウネと動き回るグルービーなベース、各曲の輪郭を見事に際立たせるハードにして鮮烈なギター。緊張感を伴う重厚なロックが展開する前半、これらの音が渾然一体となって、身体中がビリビリしてくる。
後半は、より空間を生かしたアレンジとカントリーをルーツとする歌心が、ヒリヒリと胸を突き刺す。胸の高鳴りは、ロンドンのライブ会場で飛び跳ねながら、大声で歌い叫び、泣いている姿が目に浮かぶfansで一度最高潮を向かえる。そして、最後のarizonaに至り、まるで太陽から降り注ぐかのような眩いギターサウンドが、終わることの無い熱狂と恍惚をもたらす。
ロック好きにはたまらない、刺激的で感動的な音が充満する傑作。

ブルースをベースとしたシンプルかつ力強いサザン・ロックのスタイルはかわらず。二枚目までにあったガレージっぽい感触は少し薄れた。U2、パールジャムやボブ・ディランなどそうそうたる大物のサポートアクトを経ての成長ぶりはあきらか。
淡々とリフを刻みながら高揚感をましていくギターが格好良い一曲目。7分を越える曲を一曲目に持ってくるあたりバンドとしての自信を感じさせます。このスケール感はU2の影響もあるかな。
よれたボーカルは好きずきだと思うけど、しなやかなリズム隊も気持ちよくバンドとしてのグルーブ感が素晴らしい。なんといってもギターバンドの魅力が磨かれている一枚。凄みすら感じるかれらの三枚目。これぞ骨太な大人のロック。
