アル･スチュアートの初期ＣＢＳ時代の４枚のアルバムが、米リイシュー専門レーベル、Collector's Choice からＣＤ化されました。本作は69年１月発売の２枚目のアルバムで、音源自体は初期３作を収めた93年の２枚組編集盤『To Whom It May Concern』でＣＤ化されていましたが、単体でのＣＤリリースは初めてです。本作はフェアポート･コンヴェンションのメンバーらが参加し、アルの内省的ながらもポップな魅力が出たシンガー･ソングライター的なフォーク･ロック･アルバムで、初期の傑作と言えると共に、英メロディ･メイカー誌で69年ベスト･フォーク･アルバムに輝いた出世作でもあります。アナログＡ面にあたる (1)〜(5) がおそらくフェアポートのリチャード･トンンプソン、サイモン･ニコル (g) 、アッシュリー･ハッチングス (b) 、マーティン･ランブル (ds) らによる演奏（弾き語りの (3) を除く）。ロック色強いポップな (1) (5) など、アルの新たな出発点ともなったもので、歌われている内容はデビュー作同様、恋愛やセックスを赤裸々に描いた告白的な私小説風ラヴ･ソング。その典型が18分にも及ぶタイトル曲 (6) で、ここではかなり露骨なセックス描写が歌われ、英語がわかるリスナーは赤面モノかもしれませんが、ボブ･ディランからの影響を感じるヴォーカルに、ジミー･ペイジもギターで参加した控えめながら表現力豊かな演奏の好サポートもあり、最後まで飽きさせない、初期アルの魅力が最大限に発揮された曲と言えるでしょう。良くも悪くも、歌とヴォーカルに青さを感じさせるナイーヴさ、そこが初期のアルを好きになれるかどうかの分かれ目でしょうが、サウンドだけ聴いても、本作の充実ぶりは充分にわかると思います。
ボーナス･トラックは、今回の４枚の再発盤すべてに言えることですが、本編と同時期の音源ではありません。本盤では『24 Carrots』 (80年) 時のデモ (7) 、89年頃のデモ (8) (9) を追加。アル自身が提供した音源だそうですが、10年も20年も隔たりがある音はさすがに違和感があります。リマスタリングにはライノのビル･イングロットも参加しているだけに音質は優秀です。

６９年発表の２ｎｄ。デビュー作の装飾の多いアレンジは影を潜め、アコギの弾き語りにドラムス、ベース、リード・ギターが絡むフォーク・ロック的な作風で統一した初期の名盤。フォーク・シンガーとしての彼の実力をまざまざと示す作品であり、フォークの名盤という括りがあるのであれば、絶対に選ばれるべき作品だと思う。彼の曲はどれもが陽的なイメージが強くポップなものが多いが、本作では４．を筆頭にして陰影や憂いを帯びた渋いメロディを聞かせる曲も多く収録されている。１．はオールディーズ・フレイバーの漂うフォーク・ロックの名曲。印象的なビートルズ風上昇メロディが美しい。２．もシンプルな演奏が楽曲の良さを引き立てる。ギターのみのバッキングからリズム隊が登場する瞬間は常套だが感動的。３．はアコギにパーカッションが付くティラノザウルス・レックス風の編成ながら、アルの方は陽のイメージが強い。６．はメドレー形式で歌われるプチ・フォーク・オペラ風の大作。ボーナス３曲は朝日を浴びて芽吹く花のような美しすぎて失禁しそうなポップ・ナンバー。違和感なく収まっている。
