キツくて辛いこともあれば、最高にハッピーなこともある。人生山あり谷あり。辛いことあっての幸せ。表裏一体。当たりもあればハズレもある。辛さがあればこそ幸せを実感できる。失って実感できる大事なもの。喪失と再生。毎日無事でいられること、家族とともに過ごせること、友人と他愛のない話ができること、毎日帰る家があるということ、常に複数の選択肢があるということ、ありがたいと思う感謝の気持ちを感じられること。結局人生は最高だとガープの世界は教えてくれる。

すでに２０年以上前の作品ですが、このみずみずしさは一体何なのでしょう？
かなり悲惨な結末にもかかわらず一種の爽快感というか開放感を感じさせる不思議な映画ですねぇ。
監督のジョージ・ロイヒルと言えば「明日に向かって撃て」「スティング」と言った名作中の名作を世に送り出した「巨匠」なわけですが、そんな肩書きの重さを一切感じさせない繊細さと感受性は驚きの一言。
結局、登場人物への視線が優しく包容力があるからでしょう。ほんとに優れたアメリカ映画を作る名匠でした。
ジョン･アービングの原作に基づいた本作はセックス・バイオレンス・過激なイデオロギーと陰惨な要素も多々含まれるストーリーにも関わらず、それもガープを巡る人生の一部として描くことに成功しています。その上で生きることの意味や喜びをきちんと浮かび上がらせることができてるからこそ、の感動なのですね。
最近、こういう「前向き」な作品が少なくなってしまった気がして残念です。

ロビン・ウィリアムスもはまり役ですが、グレン・クローズとトランスセクシャルの元プロフットボール選手のジョン・リスゴーが強烈。特にＧ・クローズはこの包容力のある「聖女的な」ママ役がはまり過ぎてそのイメージを払拭するのに苦労したとか（それで「危険な情事」に出たそうです）。

決して派手な作品ではありませんが、映画はチューインガム以上の意味を持ちうると信じたい方にはお勧め。とくに若い人たちには是非見ていただきたいなぁ。

　いわずと知れたジョン・アーヴィングの大ベストセラーの映画化であり、ジョージ・ロイ・ヒル監督の隠れた傑作。原作は一読しかしていないが、これを映像化するのは難しいのではないかと思ったが、なかなか面白い作品になった。
　ビートルズの名曲When I'm sixty-fourに乗せて赤ん坊が飛ぶオープニングから衝撃のエンディングまで面白い映像感覚で見せてくれます。冷静に考えればかなり悲劇的で暗いエピソードが多いにもかかわらず、ウェットにならず、妙にホンワカした雰囲気の語り口なのがいい。　　主演のロビン・ウィリアムズも現在のようなしつこさやくどさがなく、脇を固めるグレン・クロース、ジョン・リスゴー、アマンダ・プラマーらが個性的な役柄を好演していたし、メアリー・ベス・ハートの美しさも印象的。
　なお、途中で出てくる民家に飛行機で突っ込むパイロットはロイ・ヒル監督本人です。
