　OASISやBLUR、或いはRADIOHEADといった新世代ロックが登場して以来、イギリスのシーンは大きく変貌した。キャッチーなギター・リフやキーボードを軸にした1980年代的なサウンドはメジャーではなくなった。歴史の長いバンドにとって、シーンの変貌は避けて通れない問題でもある。そんな中、MARILLIONは「変化すること」を選択したようだ。

　ギター・リフ/キーボード・リフは殆ど姿を消し、オルタナのバッキングに近くなった。ヴァース部分は「静かだ」とさえ表現できる曲が多い。以前は隙のない、完全主義のサウンドをしていたが、最近では随分と「ゆったりした」ものになった。曲によってはホテルのBGMで流れていてもおかしくない程だ。1989年以来メンバーが不変のバンドとしては異例の大きな変化で、「トラディショナル・ロック」を期待するファンは恐らく殆どが離れたものと思われる。プログレッシヴなテイストだけは意外に残っていて、時折、ラウドな10分以上もある大作をやったりもする…。

　とは言え、無駄に長い曲を一切やらないバンドだった昔の姿はない。「テーマが壮大な時、結果的に曲が長くなるのであって、初めから10分の曲を作ろうとしているわけではない」と語っていたのは昔のこと。今の彼らは現代風オルタナティヴ・ロックだ。それだけではないかも知れないが、少なくともサウンドのベースはそうだ。

　「Brave」に感動して、来日公演にも行ったクチだが、不思議と「Brave」以前の作品は気に入ったものの、「Brave」より後の作品には魅力を感じなかった。「Brave」を最後に、「メロディックなポップ・ソング」という基本骨格が、変化してしまったからだろう。今まで何となく彼らに付いてきたが、僕はこれでファンを引退しようと思う。後は、現在のサウンドを気に入っている、若いファンに任せればいい。そんな風に思う。

このアルバム、とにかく「歌」に、こだわった作品だと思う。バックの演奏は、スティーヴ・ホガースのヴォーカルを引き立たせることに、徹している感がある。そのため、全体の印象が地味な作品になってしまった感が否めない。しかし、聴く者のココロを揺さぶる「歌の力」の凄味は十分味わえると思う。

このバンドに80年代の幻想やプログレ的なものは、もう期待しない。とにかく、本物の「歌」を聴かせてくれるアーティストとして進化し続けて欲しい。

全体的な出来は悪くない。それどころか、個々の曲の完成度は高く、(3)(6)(10)などの曲は極めて美しく、心に響く。彼らは昔のイメージから変わることを選んで、おおむね成功しているが、多くの新しいリスナーに受け入れられるほどの独創性を構築できたか、といわれると疑問がのこる。radioheadやcoldplayの作品のような50年先に歴史上に名を残すような名盤にはなりえないけれど、私は愛聴版としてこのアルバムを聞き続けるでしょう。大人がじっくりと聞き込む事が出来る貴重なアルバムではあるが、前作と比べてもインパクトは乏しく、おそらく売り上げも前作に届かないでしょう。
