Album Details

Japanese version of their 2007 album features two bonus tracks, 'Our Own Place' and 'Dedication To The Horse'. The London duo who, as pioneers of jungle and drum n bass, they massively changed the face of 90s music and made a huge contribution to dance culture. Play With The Changes is their first album for six years in a career that has gained critical acclaim, a Mercury nomination, MOBO award and widespread respect from the music fraternity. It is 4hero's duality of approach which makes them truly unique. This album is richly textured and musically complex. Fluttering, delicate beats mutate into orchestral excursions. Strings and live drums give way to abstract sounds and disjointed electronica. It features a role call of superior vocalists of the quality one has come to expect from 4hero, including Carina Andersson, Ursula Rucker, Jody Watley, Bugz In The Attic's Kaidi Taitham, Phonte of Little Brother, Jack Davey (J*DaVeY) and Larry Mizell (who has written and produced for the Jackson 5, Marvin Gaye and countless others) join a host of new evolving talent. 17 tracks. UKのクラブミュージック・シーンで最高峰に位置する4hero。
私は、実は彼らの作品をリアルタイムで聴くことは初めてなのですが、
いたく感動しています。
1月にして、早くも今年のベストアルバムでは？と感じています。
これを超えるクオリティのアルバムが作れる人がいるでしょうか…

フィーチャーしているアーティスト・シンガー
Carina Andersson（一部CDショップのWebでCarleen Andersonになってましたが全然違います）
Jack Davey / Jason Yarde / Face / Bembe Segue
Kaidi Tatham(Bugz In The Attic) / Lady Alma
Phonte of Little Brother / Larry Mizell / Ursula Rucker
などなど。
ビッグ＆おなじみな面々ばかりですが、ゲストを知らなくても充分素晴らしい。
クレジット出さなくても、勝負できる質の高さは保証できます。

傑作との呼び声も高い前作「Creating Patterns」のような、Mark MacとDegoが分業で、
歌モノが多かったり流麗なストリングスをフィーチャーしたりというスタイルは継続しているかのように見えますが、
そこには確実に大きな進化が秘められているのではないかと思います。

私には上手く説明できないのがもどかしいですが…
でもやっぱり彼らは常に最先端にいます。
6年間、ソロやそれぞれの仕事を通して吸収してきたものがここに表れているのだと思います。
新鮮でありながら、でも普遍的な匂いもして、ずっと、永く聴き続けられる予感のするアルバムです。
他の追随を許さない高みに彼らはいると思います。

私は特にMark Macが作る、ストリングスアレンジが素敵で美メロな曲に弱いです。
オープニングを飾るMorning Childは感動の嵐でした。4hero節、みたいなものが出てます。
全曲素晴らしいんですけどね。
ジャンルは4hero、そう表現しても良いぐらい素敵なアルバム。
だって、彼らの音楽の前にジャンルなんて、必要ないでしょう？

前作から6年ぶりのニューアルバム。最初に聴いた印象は、"Changes"と言う言葉にとてつもない期待をしてしまったのは確かであるが、全く予想もしていない方向への"Changes"の為に唖然としたものであった。これまでの彼らの作品の中にはどこか他より一歩も二歩も先に行っている部分があったが、このアルバムにはそれは見受けられないように思う。

ただし、はっきりと言える事はここまでの完成度を誇るアルバムは滅多にない。完成度に関して言えば、代表作である"Two Pages"よりも勝るだろうと思う。それ故、この作品に関して言えば、彼らがこれまで挑戦し続け、様々な経験を経て培ってきたものの、集大成的な作品ではないか？と思う。勿論、いつまでも新たな音楽に挑戦し続ける姿勢を崩さない彼らであるから、次の作品はまた新たな"Changes"があるだろうと予想している。

これまでの彼らの作品はビートを重視したものに対し、今回の作品は完全に楽曲を重視したものだと思う。腕利きの素晴らしいゲストボーカル陣と、4heroの持ち味でもあるスタイリッシュなビート、美しいストリングスによるサウンドが重なり合って、極上の音楽を楽しむ事が出来る。全作収録のCarina Andersonによる"Les Fleur"の雰囲気を残した"Morning Child"で幕を開け、"Play With The Changes"、"Something In the Way"と言った心地よい楽曲の数々。そして、Stevie Wonderのカバーで知られる"Superwoman"は原曲に勝るとも劣らない出来であるように思う。大衆性にも富んだナンバーが多く、まだ4heroの音楽を知らない人達にも自信を持って薦められる作品であると思う。
