　DVDが出ていたんですね。これぞハードボイルドという内容で、余分な感傷性をばっさり削ったD.シーゲルの演出が素晴らしいです。私も初見はWOWOWの放映だったのですが一回見ただけで引き込まれました。特に登場人物のキャラの立ち具合が見事この上なし。情婦役に定評のあるA.ディッキンソンのあだっぽさや色香が全開になっており、R.レーガンも若い頃は善玉役が主だったのですが「我が意を得たり」という感じで悪の黒幕役を演じます。もしかしたらL.マーヴィンは本作で演じた役柄が『殺しの分け前ポイントブランク』へとつながったのかも。本当に渋いです。
　でもやっぱりこの映画はカサべテスに尽きます。独立系映画の父である彼は俳優としても独特の痕跡を映画史に残しています。私にとっては『フューリー』での壮絶な爆死が忘れられません（世代によっては『特攻大作戦』の兵卒役を挙げるでしょう）。そして本作では「喪失感を抱え殺されるのをずっと待っていた男」を哀切なまでに演じます。元々人生にニヒルな諦念を抱いていた男がほんのわずかにつかんだ愛。しかしそれは惨くも翻弄されたに過ぎない、つかの間の愛の幻…。この辺りに共鳴できるものがあるか否かが本作の評価の分かれ目になるでしょう。そしてL.マーヴィンたちが依頼主であるR.レーガン達に忘恩的に反旗を翻していくのは単に金目当てだからだけではなく、彼らもまた彼の抱えた拭いきれぬ痛み・哀しみに共鳴するものがあったからなのではないでしょうか。
　この映画はもっと知られて良い佳作ですし、元合衆国大統領のハリウッドスターとしての姿を一番容易に見ることの出来る作品です。是非再評価の狼煙を。なお本作はB.ランカスターとE.ガードナーの出世作『殺人者』のリメイクですがこちらも傑作です。“原案”に近いヘミングウェイの原作『殺し屋』（短編集『男だけの世界』所蔵）も味わい深い作品です。素晴らしき“名作”のリレーです。

L.ﾏｰｳﾞｨﾝが重厚さと迫力、対照的にJ.ｶｻｳﾞｪﾃｽが人間の弱みとｴｺﾞを巧みに演じ、この二人の圧倒的演技で物語のﾃﾝｼｮﾝを終始高めてくれています。R.ﾚｰｶﾞﾝ元大統領も出演し、ﾊﾟｯｹｰｼﾞなどの写真では重厚な感じがしましたが、映画の中では重要な役ながらもﾊﾟｯとせず、見かけほどの迫力も無く、役者さんよりも演説を主とする政治家の方が向いていると感じました。
