1987年のGet Rhythm以来20年、ようやく出ました、本当のRy Cooderのソロ・アルバム。前作Chavez Ravineでも多少自分で歌ってたけど、今回はたっぷり彼の歌が聴ける。しかもほとんどの曲が自作。こんなことってデビュー以来初めてでしょう。自分が飼ってた猫を主人公に綴られた物語を歌でたどり、彼が40年間近く一貫して描き続けている貧しいアメリカの根っこがここでも見事に表現されている。Jim KeltnerやVan Dyke Parks、Flaco Jimenezといったお馴染みの面々に加え Paddy MoloneyやPete & Mike Seegerなど豪華ゲスト。Roland WhiteってClarenceのお兄さんだったかな。絵本仕立てのブックレットも豪華だけど、とにかく今回はRyのボーカルを前面に出した作りになっていて、これが最高。こういう歌を歌うためにこれまで20年間寄り道してたのかと思えば納得。今まで、「LowellもJesseもDuaneもみんな死んじゃったのに、あんただけは生きてるんだから、もっと自分の音楽をやれよ」と悪態をついてきた（本人に届いてはいないと思うけど）自分が恥ずかしい。すべて撤回して、幾重にもお詫びします。

暖かいアルバムです。一言で言えば、これまでのアルバム全部を１枚にまとめた感じだと思います。17曲は、こんな感じです↓
いきなりカントリーフレーバーたっぷりにスタートし、Van Dykeのピアノが入り、Boomer's Storyあたりの雰囲気で、カントリー/ブルーグラス系の曲が続きます。
5曲目で、フラーコ・ヒメネスが入り、テックスメックスに、6曲目は、テリー・エバンス＆ボビー・キングと一緒に、少しヘビーに展開します。
7曲目は、女性Voをフューチャーして、Jazzに入ってそうな雰囲気になり、再び、カントリー/ブルーグラス系、テックスメックスの曲が続きます。
中盤は、11曲目に、レトロでチープな録音のブルース、12曲目で、クロスローズの頃の雰囲気のヘビーなロックが楽しめます。
そして、後半は、待ちまったスライドが聞けるカントリーブルースの13曲目から、サントラ時代の雰囲気の14曲目、沖縄の香りがする15曲目、美しく優しい16曲目、しっとりとスライドが素晴らしい17曲目と続く、1.1時間。最高です！

　Ry Cooderと言うと「紫の峡谷」、「チキンスキン・ミュージック」あたりが有名どころでしょう。とりあえず、これまで人に勧める分には私もこの２枚を勧めていましたし、これからも間違いは無いでしょう。が、今回の作品でお勧めのアルバムが１枚増えました。間違いない名盤です。
　Buddyと言う猫のストーリー。この猫と蛙とネズミが、古き良きアメリカから醜いアメリカまでを旅していくと言うような話です。
　いつものおなじみの面々から新たなゲストまでみんなでこの味わい深い（？）ストーリーを奏でています。あのゆったりした音は健在。Ryの追い求める世界はこういうものなのでしょう。
　今回は、ブックレット付きでデジパック仕様とパッケージにも凝っています。ストーリー、挿絵もあり、歌詞もばっちり載っています。高い国内盤を買わなくても、お安い輸入盤で十分楽しめます。
　ゆったりしたRyの歌が思い切り楽しめる間違いない名盤です。
