　松竹で新藤・吉村コンビ解消を迫られて、飛び出して作った映画だという。この企画はいろいろな会社に持ち込み東宝で決まったが、諸所の事情で流れ大映に持ち込まれたといういわくつきの映画である。大映でも重役の川口松太郎が芸者ものは当らないと難色を示したが、海外出張の間に企画を通して出来上がったという。まさに綱渡りの状態だが、戦前の溝口健二監督の「祗園の姉妹」に似た感じではあるものの力作に仕上がったと思う。
　ドライなためにヒロインは難に遭遇するのは一緒だが、こちらは己の非を悟り、妹夫婦の史幸せを願うところは大いに救いになっている。小林桂樹が若い！東宝へ移籍する前の時期のもの。また「祗園の姉妹」にも出て進藤英太郎のパトロンも面白いキャラクターで楽しませてくれる。

ソフト化するにあたっては、せめて鑑賞に耐えうるぐらいの仕上げをしてもらいたかったですね。 古い作品なので加工処理も難しいとは思いますが、それにしてもノイズ音は耳障りですし、画面もユラユラと揺れて見づらいので、もう少し何とかCG技術を駆使して作品の価値を高めるような処置をして見せてほしかったと思いました。
