ノイマンの死去直前に録音された、最後の録音。
録音セッションでは逸話が残された。本人の希望によって予定になかった9番の録音が急遽なされたこと、そしてそれまでのノイマンの録音姿勢とは異なる特別な熱心さが団員を驚かせたとある。そして、その直後、誰も予想もせずに息を引き取ったのである。9番の録音を希望したことと直後に息を引き取ったこととの因果関係など想像を聴き手に膨らませてくれる。しかし、そのようなエピソードに頼らなくても十分水準の高い演奏になっている。
ノイマンの身体、息遣いと一体になったかのように音楽が自然に流れている。奇をてらうこともない、いわば正統派とも言える演奏だ。オケもノイマンの呼吸と一体化しているように、無理がない。しかし、マーラーのグロテスクさは影を潜め、極めて美しい音楽となっている。メロディを流れるように歌い上げられている様は、死のグロテスクさは影を潜め、美しさ、輝きに溢れたもので、ノイマンの死への美しい憧憬を想像させる。自然の美しさがそのまま死の美しさだと言えるような演奏だ。

ノイマン先生最晩年の録音で、圧倒的な立体感あるホール反響も生々しい好録音となったですがな。このアダージョの3日後やったかな、ウィーンでノイマン先生が亡くなった、という感慨を抜きにして本盤を聴くのは難しい。ノイマン先生の最晩年のマーラーサイクル（7, 8番は未完）を全て聴かしていただいて、ようやくこの演奏の意味するところが凡人のわてにも分かってきた。

白眉は1楽章。つややかな弦ときらびやかな金管は、最晩年の2, 5, 6番と同様に、ノイマン先生らしからぬ強い自己主張を表現しておる。録音のよさもあいまって、ソロ楽器の位置までつぶさに分かるし、クライマックスの迫力が凄い。2楽章は意外とややテンポは速く、6番の2楽章の解釈を想起。3楽章はフツー（ジュリーニでも、レニーでも、バルビローリでもこの楽章の方向性だけはさほど変わらん）。

そして終楽章。物足りない、あるいは死を目前としたノイマン先生が体力的な理由で、適当に切り上げたのかも、と思うとりました。ここには、ジュリーニ先生のシカゴでの慟哭やアバドのベルリンでの激しい感情のさざなみはないですわな。ほいで、わては考えた。魂が滅びゆく、はかない生の体現する美は本当に雄弁なのかどうかを。　ノイマン先生の解釈は、（結果的に）あと数日となった自らの有限の生をも達観したような、最期になっていわゆるノイマンらしい、自己主張を抑えた音楽の自然な流れを重視した解釈。でもほれが、最晩年のノイマン先生の1, 3番でのボヘミアの自然の心から楽しむような純朴さに通じているような気がしてきて、凡人のわても今日はこの終楽章に強く感情移入いたしました。ジャケットの老いたノイマン氏の数点の写真が実に含蓄があって好きです。宝物になりそうな名盤
