　わたしは、シューベルトの交響曲についてはその演奏に「勁さ」をもとめる。ベーム／BPOの組み合わせはその要求にぴったりであり、たとえばこれもほかに廉価で出ている第９番「ザ・グレート」などにおいても、その大きく構築的な表現が素晴らしい。剛直な表現をする指揮者はほかにもいるが、ベームと比べるとなにかそぐわない印象を受けてしまう。
　ベーム／BPOによるシューベルトの交響曲全集は１９７０年代前半にレコード・アカデミー賞を受賞していると記憶する。そのお墨付きだけでも買って損をするわけのない演奏であるのだが、なかでも４番、５番、９番が圧倒的である（１番から９番のうち、交響曲第７番は欠番である）。９番の演奏がすぐれていることはもう言い尽くされている感があるので、このディスクにレビューを書いた。ベートーヴェン的な４番、モーツァルト的な５番（これはあとから雰囲気で似ていると言われたのではなく、あきらかにシューベルト自身が意識的に作風をそうしたのだという書簡が残っている）という組み合わせの面白さも魅力である。
