もともとは廉価だということで購入したのですが、私はカラヤンのこの演奏でブラームスの交響曲の素晴らしさが初めてわかりました。良いのは圧倒的に２番なのですが、これだけ異なる性格の楽章がまったく間延びすることなく緊密に繋がった曲は他にないでしょう。
いままでブラームスの曲はバッハやモーツァルトと違って、拡がりがなく、内向的なイメージがありどちらかというと避けてきたのですが、カラヤンのこの「２番」は「英雄」や「運命」のような力強い意志の音楽として聴こえます。
特に第一楽章と最終楽章の拡がりと盛り上がりは圧倒的です。
またカラヤンのブラームス２番というと、８０年代の最後の録音のものが評価が高いようですが、私には音がつややかすぎるという感覚があり、今は６０年代の１回目の録音のこの演奏を好んでいます。上り調子のカラヤンの覇気がみなぎるようで、残響も独特のよさがあります。古さをまったく感じさせないどころか、新しい現代の音楽として聴くことができます。
また、ブラームスの４つの交響曲は1番を第一楽章、４番を最終楽章とする、広大な1つの交響曲として聴くことができるということもわかりました。
カラヤンのこの演奏を聴くと元気になります。おすすめです。

　私がこれまで聴いたブラームス２番の中で最高のＣＤ。音質は全域でバランス良く、解像度が高く奥行き感もすばらしい。チェロやコントラバスはしっとりとして太く、ヴァイオリンは艶がある。良くできたホールの響きに似て、厚く量感豊か。１９６３年の録音であるが、リマスターが高技術なのだろう。３番も同様で、第２楽章は木管楽器のささやきにコントラバスの響きが悲しい。ときに鳥肌が立ち、ときに胸が詰まるほどの感動。聴き終えると何ともいえぬ満足感に浸る。この盤がこの価格で買えるなんて申し訳ない。ぜひ、聴いてほしい１枚である。
