Produced by Jacknife Lee and recorded at Grouse Lodge Studios in Ireland. Bloc Party's newest collection of songs is a stunning, intense and brilliant follow-up to the debut. A Weekend in The City is inspired by lead singer Kele Okereke's interest in what he calls 'the living noise of a metropolis.' On Weekend, the band captures every detail from ebullient to the mundane of daily life in a modern city. These are songs desperate to understand the meaning that pulses under the moments of our everyday: there are bursting with tension, paranoia, sadness, love and an intense need for reason as to how city life has become so displacing. 11 tracks including the first single 'The Prayer'. 　冒頭“Song For Clay(Disappear Here)”の重苦しい展開。Bloc Partyというバンドをかなり過小評価していました。Museの名曲"New Born" のような揮発性を持っていながら、目の前の相手を撃ち殺そうとしたら銃が暴発してしまったかのような解放感の無さ。そして冷ややかな演奏と「Oh〜How Our How Our」と歌われるサビのラインの絶妙な調和。彼らの存在は食わず嫌いなまでに避けてた感があり、ごめんなさいって感じです。

　今作は「週末の都市(彼らで言えばロンドン)」に渦巻く欲望、享楽、怒り、孤独といったキーワードを全て取り込んでやろうという、かなり野心的かつコンセプチュアルな作りとなっています。

　とは言え社会派気取ってそんな現状を糾弾するわけでもなく、あくまでここにあるのはそんな社会の一員である自身が日常に押し潰され、蓄積されたフラストレーションに火がついて暴発したような、パーソナルな不機嫌さです。それが複雑なリズムパターン、幾重にも積み重ねられたシンセを以って聴き手に迫ってきます。膨大な情報量を一つの作品に仕上げなければならなかったほどに、フロントマンのケリー・オケレケの怒りや徒労は達していたのだと慮られます。

　そういう意味で「聴いてると死にたくなる」アルバム。それはきっと、この作品が現実からの逃避をもたらすような、ポップ・ミュージックが抱えてしまう刹那な快楽性を拒否しているからで、同時に渋谷を歩きながら聴いていてシンクロするような、私たちの日常に肉薄するリアリティを持ち得ているからです。

　これは近年雨後の竹の子のごとく出てきたＵＫバンドの姿勢とは一線を画すものだと思うんですね。我を忘れるほど享楽に甘んじたいと「願う」“The Prayer” など、逆にそんなシーンに馴染めないことを吐露してしまっているだけですから。こんな暗い曲で、彼らはシングル切ってしまっているわけです。

　と、重層的なサウンドを持った良作でありながら、ちょっとギターのフレーズに独創性が乏しく、ヴァリエーションに欠けるのが残念ですが、それが安易なカタルシスの排除に与している側面もあり、納得はできます。


　それにしても、同じようなシリアスな表現が、ロンドンより巨大な都市である東京から出てきてもおかしくないと思うんですが、どうしてなんでしょう、いっつも思うんですが日本のバンドは「僕」と「あなた」の間に「社会」が抜け落ちてしまいがちです。

ガレージロックやニューウェーブを基軸とするﾆｭｰﾛｯｸﾝﾛｰﾙ･ｼﾞｪﾈﾚｰｼｮﾝ勢の一環として頭角を現したBLOC PARTY.は本作において、ギターバンドとして、UKオルタナティブロック界の未来へと飛躍した。本作は、UKオルタナ界の金字塔的作品である、Radiohead「The Bends」、Muse「Origin of〜」、Mansun「Six」、Placebo「Black Music〜」等にも匹敵する、革新的傑作アルバムだと筆者は思う。Radioheadの1stがブリットポップ勢の一環と言われ、或いはMuseの1stがRadioheadの模倣チルドレンと揶揄された背景と、00代に入って成功を収めた数多のﾆｭｰﾛｯｸﾝﾛｰﾙ･ｼﾞｪﾈﾚｰｼｮﾝ勢に埋もれる形で人気を博した彼らの1stALの状況を比較しても、そう思わずにはいられないのである。

特筆すべきは、何と言っても前半のハイライトとも言えるプログレッシブな構成でパンクしているM5までの、冒頭5曲の怒涛の展開に尽きるだろう。不穏なメロディ展開が印象的なM4、疾走感溢れる独特ｷﾞﾀｰｲﾝﾄﾛにはっとさせられるM2などのシングルも、惜しみなく前半に控える。また、前半の勢いに押されがちな中盤は、やや失速気味に感じるかもしれないが、ｻﾝﾌﾟﾘﾝｸﾞやｺｰﾗｽﾜｰｸ、ｷﾞﾀｰｴﾌｪｸﾄ、高速ﾄﾞﾗﾐﾝｸﾞ等を絶妙に駆使しつつ、その演奏スキルを遺憾なく発揮するM7や、美しいﾊﾞﾗｰﾄﾞで新境地を拓いたヒットシングルM9等、全体を通して聴き所には事欠かない。

1stファンには少し評価が低いようだが、彼らは一時のブーム過熱の便乗に終わるのではなく、前記したような偉大なバンド同様に、そのロック史に名を連ねるべく大いなるステップを踏み出したのであるのだから、是が非でも目を背けずに本作を聴き込んでもらいたい。その証拠になるかどうかは分からないが、間髪入れずに発表されたネクストシングル「Flux」（本作未収録）が、彼らの未知の底力を証明しているのではないだろうか。

メッセージ性や複雑化したリズムに話題が行きがちだが、
1stとはやや趣の違うポップミュージックとして十分に聴けるアルバム。
ギターリフの独創性、キレ味の鋭さや、タイトで手数の多いドラムはもちろん目立つし、
何よりサウンドの雰囲気を決定付けるベースも見事。
彼らの一つの到達点である"hunting for witches"や、
叙情的アンセムの変異体"waiting for the 7.18"、
大ヒットソング"I still remember"など、聴き所は多い。
0〜100まで全部いいというわけではないが、
Arctic Monkeysの2ndと比べたって、決して引けを取らない作品であることは間違いない。
