内容紹介

第一次世界大戦中。敵情偵察の任務を持つマレシャル中尉とポアルディウ大尉を乗せたフランスの飛行機は、ドイツの飛行隊長ラウフェンシュタインに撃墜されドイツ軍の捕虜となった。マレシャルはパリの機械工の出、ポアルディウは貴族、そして国こそ違うが同じく貴族であるラウフェンシュタインは二人を捕虜扱いにせず不運な勇士として食卓にさえ招待するのであった。彼等が収容されたハルバハ・キャンプの部屋には、ロザンタァルというフランスに帰化したユダヤ人の金持の息子もいた。彼のもとに、日毎送られて来る慰問品で同室の人々はぜいたくな食事をとることが出来た。貴族出で終始白い手袋をはめているポアルディウをマレシャルはなかなか信用しなかったが、脱走するための地下穴を掘る件に関しては皆んなが協力した。

言わずと知れた名作　この映画はジャン・ルノワールの絵画的映像感覚が見事。
僕はこれを見た時、戦争ドラマではないそれを越えた人間のなにかを描いた作品だと思った。
草原を歩く二人の男、脱獄を試みるシーンなどなど全編通して実に美しい　ラストの雪の中を
歩いていくシーンで「戦争は終わる」と言ってもう一人の男が「それは幻影だ」というシーン
戦争の厳しさを見事に表現した素晴らしいシーンでした。　映画史に残る名作。

　古い名画は、いま見ると、博物館行きとおもうのが少なくないが、本作品はすばらしい。ドイツの捕虜収容所からの脱出劇であるが、たとえばスティーブ・マックィーンの「大脱走」はただのアクション映画なのにくらべて、描かれた人間模様は複雑で奥のふかい作品だった。
　長く敵同士であったフランスとドイツの対立とともに、貴族と貴族、平民と貴族、将校と兵士、ユダヤ人とフランス人、男と女が登場して、見果てぬ夢をみる。脱出して生き延びたのが裕福なユダヤ人と平民出身の将校だったのが興味深い。
　ルノワール監督の映画術については、コメントする能力は持たないが、人間と世界を見る目は確かなものがあるとおもう。ＤＶＤの発売で真の名作を見ることができた。ルノワール監督の他の作品もぜひ見てみたいものだ。
