内容紹介

フランスの植民地アルジェリアの首都アルジェのカスバでの話である。カスバというのは回教徒が集まっている一割の区域を指すのであるが、アルジェのカスバはアルジェの市街から独立した丘陵の上に位置し、家々は丘陵の斜面に重なる様に並び、石畳の坂道は曲がりくねって外来者には、まるで迷路の如く怪奇と秘密の世界である。この暗黒街に王者の様に尊敬され、友達の様に親愛されている男がいる。ペペ・ル・モコと呼ばれるフランス人だ。強盗三十件、銀行襲撃二件とパリ警視庁の犯罪録に載っているお尋ね者である。ぺぺが弟の様に愛しているピエロ、強欲大力のカルロス、盗んだ宝石を一手で捌く「爺つあん」、その他ジミイやマックス等が、常に影の如くぺぺに附添っていた。ぺぺは本国からこのカスバに逃れて既に二年、狭いこの地がまるで牢獄の様に思われ望郷の念に駆られていたのだった…。

　ぺぺ（ジャン・ギャバン）は警察に追われてアルジェのカスバにひそんでいる。ある日、パリの香りのする美女（ミレイユ・バラン）がカスバにあらわれた。異郷での愛人と同郷の美女との三角関係とおきまりの悲劇的な最後。音楽でいえば、三角関係が主旋律で、ペペの逮捕劇が副旋律をかなでる。
　逮捕劇は何度か失敗する。しかし、スリマン刑事は辛抱強くぺぺを泳がせて逮捕の日を待つ。そして、両方の旋律がかさなって、クライマックスの「別れ」と「逮捕」が同時にやってくる。遠ざかる船と手錠姿のジャン・ギャバンの対比がまことに絶妙。すべてはこのラストシーンのための作品で、途中は退屈な場面もある。とはいえ、映画史上にのこる名場面に敬意を表して四つ星にした次第。

「カスバ」というなんとも日本人には異国情緒漂う場所の物語。ジュリアン・デュヴィヴィエはフランソワ・トリュフォーによってくそみそに非難されているが、この作品はジャン・ギャバンの「存在感」ありき物語である。ラストシーンでのカスバから街へおりるジャン・ギャバンの足には確固とした存在感がある。足のショットですら存在感を表出できる役者はなかなかいないのではないだろうか。しかし、照明が多すぎるのが気になって、（私は）集中できなかったところある。

　もはや旧い。しかし、この作品だけで映画史上に残った主演女優のミレーユ・バランは一見の価値有り。一種世紀末的”傾城の美”を醸し出しています。それから、この映画のラストシーンは、映画史上屈指の（メロドラマ的）名ラストシーンです。あまりにもあまりにもあまりにも映画的。監督のジュリアン・デュウィヴィエはこのラストシーンを演出しただけでも映画監督になった甲斐があるといえましょう。
