Product Description

内容紹介

1880年のメキシコ。リオとダッド・ロングワースの2人組は銀行破りを働いて追われ、砂塵激しい山の頂きにおいつめられた。馬が1頭追手の弾丸に倒れ、ダッドが代りの馬をつれてくる約束で1人山を下りていった。しかしダッドは金袋をもって逃れ再び帰ってこなかった。捕らえられたリオは監獄に入れられた。数年後、リオは気の合ったモデストと共に脱獄に成功した。そして酒場で偶然知り合ったボッブとハーベイという悪漢2人組とつれだって、一行4人でカリフォルニアに向った。一仕事しようというモントレイの町そこはかつてリオを裏切ったダッドが保安官をやっていた。目の前に現れたリオを見て、ダッドは顔色を変えた。しかしリオはもう過去のことは忘れたといった。ダッドはリオに妻マリアと彼女の連れ子である娘のルイザを紹介した。ルイザはリオにたちまち心ひかれた。翌日は、モントレイの祭の日だった。リオはルイザを浜辺につれだし、2人はここで結ばれたのだが…。

この映画のみどころは何といっても、ブランドを取り巻く助演者たちの好演技でしょう。まず、ブランドとは何度か共演し気心知れたKarl Maldenは1951年『Streetcar Named Desire』1954年『On The Waterfront』で2度アカデミー助演男優にノミネートされ、そして、Kay Juradoは1954年『Broken Lance』でアカデミー助演女優にノミネート、1952年あのゲーリー・クーパーの代表作『High Noon』においてゴールデン・グローブ助演女優を受賞した。どちらも50年代最高の助演役者のひとりであった。そしてもう一人、後に1971年『Last Picture Show』でアカデミー助演男優を受賞したBen Johnsonを忘れてはいけません。この映画は141分という長編であるが、思ったより早く感じるのも内容が濃い証拠でしょ。とにかく、リオ（プランド）の人のよさと、恐ろしいぐらいの復讐心が人間ドラマをかきたてている。最後に、1961年アカデミー撮影賞に輝いた映像美も大いに必見です。

腹黒い人間のみが登場するマカロニウェスタンの先駆けとなった作品で、今観ると面白いです。ちなみに題名の片目のジャックとはトランプの横顔のジャックのことでポーカーにおいて２枚は絶対にそろわないとのたとえだそうです。
